Often considered as a work for children, The Cunning Little Vixen is really a tale of initiation, just like the Magic Flute.

A little vixen is caught by the gamekeeper who tries in vain to tame her. Just like Monsieur Seguin's goat, the little vixen prefers to run away and live in the wild. But she pays a high price for this freedom, as a passing Hunter kills her.

But to move on from this sad moment, Janáček shows us the gamekeeper finding another small vixen - the daughter of the one he caught before. And so life goes on regardless!
