Opera Eva is the most famous opera by the romantic Czech composer Josef Bohuslav Foerster. It was created on his own libretto based on a play by Gabriela Preissová Gazdina roba in 1889. The premiere a year later caused a stir - the naturalistic drama from the life of the people in Moravian Slovakia is a direct contrast to the whimsical spirit of the rural village presented by Smetana in his Bartered Bride. Foerster did not strive for musical folklorism as was typical of many works of the 19th and the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He tried to create a universal musical drama that could take place anytime and anywhere. The rural environment creates the color of the story and determines the actions of the characters. Under the influence of a deep emotional interest, which gave rise to the creation, a lyrical, romantically tuned opera was created. It has a classic opera house with closed numbers, it uses characteristic motifs to characterize the characters. The dominant character of the work is Eva, who follows her love and happiness against the rules of society. She leaves her husband Samka and goes to live without marriage with her lover Mánek. When she finds out that Mánek is not divorcing because of her, he jumps out of despair into the Danube. Opera Eva thus ends tragically, but in line with the composer's belief that music is not capable of expressing negative feelings. Death is catharsis, purification, Eve dies with the vision of paradise. The State Opera returns to this title symbolically after 60 years, as it was the first production ever staged on its stage.
