DIE LUSTIGEN WEIBER VON WINDSOR Trailer

Ms. Fluth and Ms. Reich compare two dubious love letters: identical in wording, both signed by the aging bon vivant Sir John Falstaff, who not only hopes for a love affair, but also secretly calculates the chances of the two women's considerable fortune. But far from it, because Ms. Fluth and Ms. Reich are planning a series of acts of revenge in which hardly anyone is spared. Jealous husbands, fake brides and shady sons-in-law are brought into the field until, at the climax of the game of intrigue, the self-satisfied suitor is served his punishment with relish.

In his setting of Shakespeare's material, Otto Nicolai artfully combines the intimacy of German Romanticism with the melodic richness of Italian opera. Director Noa Naamat continues his ability to use musical irony when she examines the interpersonal distortions of the characters, comments on changing gender roles and, above all, focuses on the comedy of the two protagonists.

Frau Fluth und Frau Reich vergleichen zwei dubiose Liebesbriefe: im Wortlaut identisch, beide signiert vom alternden Lebemann Sir John Falstaff, der nicht nur auf eine Liebelei hofft, sondern sich insgeheim auch Chancen auf das erhebliche Vermögen der beiden Frauen ausrechnet. Doch weit gefehlt, denn Frau Fluth und Frau Reich planen einen Reigen an Rachetaten, in dem kaum jemand verschont bleibt. Eifersüchtige Ehemänner, falsche Bräute und windige Schwiegersöhne werden ins Feld geführt, bis am Höhepunkt des Intrigenspiels dem selbstgefälligen Bewerber seine Strafe genüsslich serviert wird.

In seiner Vertonung des Shakespeare-Stoffs verbindet Otto Nicolai die Innigkeit der deutschen Romantik kunstvoll mit dem melodischen Reichtum der italienischen Oper. Seine Fähigkeit der musikalischen Ironie wird von Regisseurin Noa Naamat weitergeführt, wenn sie die zwischenmenschlichen Verwerfungen der Figuren durchleuchtet, Geschlechterrollen im Wandel kommentiert und vor allem auf das Komödienspiel der beiden Protagonistinnen fokussiert.
