This season, Goethe's »Faust« will accompany us both on the opera stage and in the symphony concerts. The sensitive and tender perspective on »Faust II« by a French composer who died prematurely, a child prodigy, opens our concert season. Mahler was also fascinated by »Faust II« and if he starts his 5th symphony with an epic funeral march followed by music of desolation, the freshness of the final movement seems to comfort us in the face of the tragedy of seemingly senseless human action : a beneficial message!
