Gretchen has been seduced by Faust, who has deserted her and left her pregnant. She is next to a statue of the Virgin Mary as Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of Sorrows. Having placed some flowers on the statue, she prays for the Virgin’s help in her distress.

Figaro introduces himself in this famous 'patter' aria. Not only is he the barber of Seville, with his well-stocked shop, but he is also the general factotum of the city. He is happy to run errands, arrange meetings and perform all kinds of services – as long as he gets paid for it.

Figaro yn ei gyflwyno’i hun yn yr aria ‘barablu’ enwog yma. Nid yn unig y mae’n farbwr Siviglia, a chanddo stoc dda yn ei siop, ond ef hefyd ydi Siôn pob swydd y ddinas. Mae’n fodlon mynd ar neges, trefnu cyfarfodydd a gwneud pob math o gymwynas - cyn belled â’i fod yn cael ei dalu.

Wie Todesahnung... O du mein holder Abendstern – Tannhäuser - Wagner

Elisabeth and Wolfram von Eschenbach, the poet, are awaiting Tannhäuser’s return from his pilgrimage to Rome, but she cannot see him among the throng of pilgrims. She decides to sacrifice her life in order to join Tannhäuser in heaven. Wolfram sings his ‘Hymn to the Evening Star’, begging the star to greet Elisabeth as she rises heavenwards.

Nemico della patria - Andrea Chénier - Giordano

Gérard and Chénier are fellow French revolutionaries, and share a love for Maddalena. Gérard is asked to denounce Chénier as ‘enemy of the country’. He sings of his conﬂicting emotions - the corruption of his ideals in order to win Maddalena.

Isabella, ‘the Italian girl in Algiers’ of the title, has been shipwrecked on her way to find her lover Lindoro, and taken prisoner by the Bey of Algiers. She laments her fate, but then determines to overcome the Algerians by guile.

Mae Isabella ‘yr Eidales yn Algiers’ yn y teitl, wedi bod mewn llongddrylliad ar ei ffordd i gael hyd i’w chariad Lindoro, a’i gaethiwyd gan Lywodraethwr Algiers. I ddechrau, mae’n galarnadu ond wedyn mae’n penderfynu gorchfygu’r Algeriaid trwy ystryw.

Ich hab’ein glühend Messer - Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen - Mahler

The singer has a red-hot knife in his breast, bringing him the agony of lost love all day and all night. He sees the blue of her eyes when he looks at the sky and the gold of her hair when he walks in the fields. He hears her laugh as he wakes from dreaming and wishes he were dead. Mahler wrote the text himself.

The Swimmer - Sea Pictures - Elgar

In a stormy sea, a swimmer remembers happier times with a lover. This is the last of the five songs in the cycle, and Elgar includes musical quotes from the previous songs. The poem is by Adam Lindsay Gordon.

Strauss's valedictory ‘Four Last Songs’ deal serenely with the subject of death and were written shortly before he died. In 'Going to sleep' the poet is tired and wants to give himself up to the friendly night. All his senses want to sleep and his soul wishes to soar into the magic sphere of the night, to live more deeply there. The poem is by Hermann Hesse.

Elisabeth de Valois kneels before the tomb of Charles V, who was the father of her husband, King Philip. She asserts her will to help Don Carlos to fulfil his destiny and free the oppressed people of Flanders. She knows that this will be her last task, and wishes for a peaceful death.

Habañera – Carmen - Bizet

‘L’amour est un oiseau rebelle’ is the song Carmen sings to the soldiers, outside the cigarette factory, who ask her when she will fall in love. Love is a rebellious bird, she says: it is a child of Bohemia and does not obey any rules. She warns them that if she decides to fall in love, they should take care! Bizet based his melody on a song by Iradier.

Alfonso XI, King of Castile, has allowed his mistress Leonora to marry Fernando, the man she truly loves, as a reward for Fernando’s victory over the Saracens. After her initial joy, Leonora realises that she will have to tell Fernando the truth about her relationship with the king. She sees her sufferings written in the heavens, and imagines herself rejected and veiled in black.
