Die Litanei ist in der Liturgie der katholischen Kirche ein Bittgebet oder Bittgesang zwischen Vorbeter und der Gemeinde, die im Wechsel Gott anrufen. Mozart komponierte neben zahlreichen liturgischen Werken, allen voran seinem zu vielen Anlässen verwendeten Requiem, auch vier Litaneien. Unter der Leitung der jungen Wienerin Katharina Müllner fungieren der Chor der Konzertgesellschaft und der Konzertchor Wuppertal als Gemeinde, diese wird durch die im übertragenen Sinne solistischen Vorbeter Theresa Pilsl (Sopran), Sylvia Rena Ziegler (Mezzosopran), Jörg Dürmüller (Tenor) und Simon Stricker (Bariton) vervollständigt.
»Wer Musik liebt, kann nie ganz unglücklich werden.«, so lautete die Devise Franz Schuberts. Doch wenn man von derselben leben muss, kann diese Liebe verhängnisvoll werden. Und so hatte er große Erwartungen an seine Messe in As-Dur, und versuchte mit ihr als Referenz erneut eine feste Anstellung zu erwerben. Die Position des Vizehofkapellmeisters in Wien bekam Schubert nicht, zu kühn war allein schon die strukturelle Anlage der Tonarten in den verschiedenen Messteilen. Stellenweise fächert er den Chor bis zur Achtstimmigkeit auf. Das soll nicht den Hörerwartungen des Kaisers entsprochen haben.
