Phion, kerst en Mahler zijn drie begrippen die je bijna in één adem kunt noemen. Het orkest heeft een mooie traditie opgebouwd om met kerst één van Mahlers symfonische monumenten voor het voetlicht te brengen. En dat is niet voor niets: het was een voorloper van Phion, de Arnhemse Orkest Vereniging o.l.v Martin Heuckeroth, die in 1903 in Musis Sacrum met de Derde symfonie voor het eerst orkestmuziek van Mahler in Nederland uitvoerde. Om die reden kiest Phion in het jaar dat Musis Sacrum 175 jaar bestaat voor diezelfde Derde symfonie om de traditie van Mahler-kerstconcerten voort te zetten.

De imposante Derde
Mahlers Derde is niet zomaar een symfonie. Met zijn lengte van honderd minuten is het  misschien wel de langste symfonie ooit geschreven. Een symfonie die in zes delen een schitterend verhaal vertelt volgens de deeltitels die Mahler er oorspronkelijk aan gaf. Zo horen we de bloemen op het veld, de dieren in het woud, de mensen op aarde en de engelen in de hemel. Maar het mooist is het slot met het verhaal van de liefde. Voor dit alles vraagt Mahler een altsolo, een koor van vrouwen en een groot orkest. Met zijn meer dan veertig jaar ervaring is Claus Peter Flor de ideale dirigent voor deze imposante symfonie.

Phion, Christmas and Mahler are three concepts that can almost be mentioned in the same breath. The orchestra has built up a fine tradition of putting one of Mahler's symphonic monuments in the spotlight at Christmas. And that's for good reason: it was a forerunner of Phion, the Arnhemse Orkest Vereniging conducted by Martin Heuckeroth, who in 1903 in Musis Sacrum with the Third Symphony performed Mahler's orchestral music for the first time in the Netherlands. For this reason, in the year that Musis Sacrum celebrates its 175th anniversary, Phion chooses the same Third Symphony to continue the tradition of Mahler Christmas concerts.

The imposing Third
Mahler's Third is not just any symphony. At 100 minutes in length, it is arguably the longest symphony ever written. A symphony that tells a wonderful story in six parts, according to the partial titles that Mahler originally gave it. We hear the flowers in the field, the animals in the forest, the people on earth and the angels in heaven. But the most beautiful is the ending with the story of love. For all this Mahler asks for an alto solo, a choir of women and a large orchestra. With more than forty years of experience, Claus Peter Flor is the ideal conductor for this impressive symphony.
