Aufführungen der großen Sinfonien Gustav Mahlers zählen zu den Höhepunkten einer Konzertsaison, stellen aber auch immer ganz besondere Herausforderungen an die Mitwirkenden wie an die Zuhörenden. Bei der Dritten (1895/96) handelt es sich noch dazu um die längste Sinfonie, die Mahler geschrieben hat. Sie dauert an die 100 Minuten. Neben dem groß besetzten Orchester verlangt Mahler eine Alt-Solistin, einen Frauen­chor und einen Kinderchor. Inhaltlich kann man die 3. Sinfonie als eine Art Fortsetzung der Zweiten, der »Auferstehungssinfonie« betrachten. Auch sie gehört zur Gruppe der Wunderhorn-Sinfonien Mahlers, wird doch im fünften Satz auf einen Text aus dieser Volksliedersammlung zurückgegriffen, ergänzt durch Verse aus Nietzsches Also sprach ­Zara­thustra im vierten Satz. Mahlers Ausspruch »Aber Sinfonie heißt mir eben: mit allen Mitteln der vorhandenen Technik eine Welt aufbauen«, ist von ihm selbst nirgends so radikal umgesetzt worden wie in der 3. Sinfonie. »Die Zweite gilt dem Menschen, die Dritte aber dem Universum. Die Zweite ist gleichsam anthropozentrisch, die Dritte dagegen‚ ›kosmisch‹ « (Constantin Floros). In einem Programm, das später jedoch nicht veröffentlicht wurde, nennt Mahler die Sinfonie einen »Sommermorgentraum«. Die überlieferten Satz­überschriften versuchen stationengleich die Totalität der Welt einzufangen: I. »Der Sommer marschiert ein«, II. »Was mir die Blumen auf der Wiese erzählen«, III. »Was mir die Tiere im Wald erzählen«, IV. »Was mir die Nacht erzählt«, V. »Was mir die Morgenglocken erzählen«, VI. »Was mir die Liebe erzählt«. Mahler: »Und so bildet mein Werk eine alle Stufen der Entwicklung in schrittweiser Steigerung umfassende musikalische Dichtung. Es beginnt bei der leblosen Natur und steigert sich bis zur Liebe Gottes!«

Performances of Gustav Mahler's great symphonies are among the highlights of a concert season, but they also always present very special challenges for the participants and the listeners. The Third (1895/96) is also the longest symphony that Mahler wrote. It lasts about 100 minutes. In addition to the full orchestra, Mahler asked for an alto soloist, a women's choir and a children's choir. In terms of content, the Third Symphony can be viewed as a kind of continuation of the Second, the »Resurrection Symphony«. It also belongs to the group of Mahler's Wunderhorn symphonies, as the fifth movement uses a text from this collection of folk songs, supplemented by verses from Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustrain the fourth sentence. Mahler's statement »But symphony means to me: building a world with all the means of available technology«, has never been implemented by him as radically as in the 3rd symphony. “The second is for man, but the third is for the universe. The second is, as it were, anthropocentric, while the third is 'cosmic' « (Constantin Floros). In a program that was not later published, Mahler calls the symphony a "summer morning dream." The surviving sentence headings try to capture the totality of the world like stations: I. »Summer is marching in«, II. »What the flowers on the meadow are telling me«, III. "What the animals in the forest tell me", IV. "What the night tells me", V. "What the morning bells tell me", VI. »What love tells me«. Mahler: »And so my work forms a musical poem encompassing all stages of development in gradual escalation. It starts with inanimate nature and builds up to the love of God!«
