The first Kapellmeister Florian Erdl and the Badische Philharmonie Pforzheim bring colors and shadows to the CongressCentrum Pforzheim in the 5th symphony concert on April 10th. The colors can be found above all in the expressive playing of the solo trombonist Frederic Belli, winner of numerous international competitions and guest soloist with renowned orchestras and festivals. He plays the trombone concerto by the Italian composer Nino Rota, who is also well known for his film music compositions such as the Oscar-winning music for the film "The Godfather - Part II". The German premiere of Andrea Tarrodi's "Serenade in Seven Colors" will be just as dazzling. The Swedish composer inspired the colorful music of greats such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Miles Davis for the "Serenade", which she combined with her own ideas in a synesthetic approach: "The music developed a life of its own, floated away and was shaped into something completely different, although one can perhaps still hear traces of the sources of inspiration. From my inner perspective, the piece changes into different colors.” This spectrum of colors is supplemented by Georges Bizet's childishly playful “Petite Suite”, based on the piano pieces “Jeux d'enfants”.

The second half of the concert is completely different: the ensemble members Stamatia Gerothanasi and Paul Jadach lead us with the Badische Philharmonie and Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 14 into gloomy realms of shadow with their powerful voices. Shostakovich dedicated the symphony entirely to the theme of death and set a total of eleven texts by poets such as Federico García Lorca, Rainer Maria Rilke and Guillaume Apollinaire to music. He particularly wanted to contrast the previous compositions on the subject, which often ended happily despite the subject matter: "Death awaits each of us. I see nothing good in our lives ending like this, and that's what I want to convey in this work.” In the here and now, in relation to the Ukraine war, this shadow work by a Russian composer takes on a bitter taste. At the time, Shostakovich himself became a victim of the Stalinist system, which he criticized, feared for his life and was censored. "To relive the history of our country between 1930 and 1970, it is enough to hear Shostakovich's symphonies," said the weekly Moskovskye Novosti. Lines of poetry that seem far away are given a frightening topicality, as in Apollinaire's poem "Die Wacht": "In the trenches he dies before nightfall, my little soldier, my lover and brother."
