März 1894 anlässlich der Trauerfeier des berühmten Dirigenten Hans von Bülow erklang in Hamburgs Hauptkirche St. Michael Auferstehn, ja auferstehn wirst Du, und Gustav Mahler wusste auf einmal: nur so und nicht anders konnte seine 2. Sinfonie in c-Moll enden. Sofort nach seiner Rückkehr aus dem Gottesdienst begann er zu komponieren und innerhalb von drei Wochen beendete er das Werk. Vom 1. Satz Todtenfeier an mit seiner anklingenden archaischen Dies irae-Sequenz über das wunderbar schlichte Wunderhorn-Lied Urlicht bis hin zum strahlenden und triumphalen Es-Dur-Schluss des finalen 5. Satzes, der mit den Worten Zu Gott wird es dich tragen endet, nimmt er die Zuhörer mit auf eine Reise, die nach dem irdischen Sein erst beginnen wird.
