15 Jahre nach seinem Weggang aus Dessau, wo er von 2001 bis 2009 als Generalmusikdirektor und Chefdirigent der Anhaltischen Philharmonie wirkte, kehrt Golo Berg als Gast ans Pult seines ehemaligen Orchesters zurück. Er wählte zwei große, höchst unterschiedliche Werke aus. Beiden gemeinsam ist, dass sie von ihren Komponisten mehrfach überarbeitet wurden und heutzutage eher am Rande des Standardrepertoires angesiedelt sind. Dabei darf die 2. Sinfonie von Anton Bruckner, die dieser in den Jahren 1871/72 niederschrieb, durchaus mehr Beachtung für sich beanspruchen, vor allem deshalb, weil Bruckners Sinfonie-Typ hier viel stärker ausgeprägt ist als in der urwüchsigen 1. Sinfonie. So hören wir am Beginn der Zweiten erstmals das berühmte Tremolo, jenes Einschwingen, das für Bruckner später charakteristisch werden wird. Eine weitere Eigenart des Komponisten tritt hier besonders auffällig zutage: Die einzelnen Themengruppen sind durch Zäsuren in Form von ein- bis zweitaktigen Generalpausen voneinander getrennt, was der Sinfonie den spöttischen Beinamen »Pausensinfonie« eintrug. Dass Sergej Prokofjews Sinfonisches Konzert für Violoncello und Orchester relativ selten auf den Konzertprogrammen auftaucht, liegt an den außergewöhnlich hohen Ansprüchen, die das Werk an den Solisten stellt. Der Komponist wollte die Möglichkeiten des Cellos in technischer wie in musikalischer Hinsicht voll ausschöpfen, wobei ihm kein Geringerer als Mstislav Rostropowitsch beratend zur Seite stand. Das Soloinstrument ist in diesem 1952 vollendeten Sinfonischen Konzert, einer völligen Neukomposition von Prokofjews älterem Cellokonzert op. 58 von 1938, unablässig beschäftigt und dabei eng und untrennbar mit dem Orchesterpart verbunden. Neben den virtuosen Passagen weist das Konzert auch zahlreiche lyrischen Schönheiten und einprägsame Melodien auf.

15 years after leaving Dessau, where he was General Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Anhalt Philharmonic Orchestra from 2001 to 2009, Golo Berg is returning to conduct his former orchestra as a guest. He chose two large, very different works. What both have in common is that they have been revised several times by their composers and today are more on the fringes of the standard repertoire. The 2nd symphony by Anton Bruckner, which he wrote in the years 1871/72, deserves more attention, mainly because Bruckner's symphony type is much more pronounced here than in the original 1st symphony. Thus, at the beginning of the Second, we hear the famous tremolo for the first time, that swinging in that would later become characteristic of Bruckner. Another peculiarity of the composer is particularly noticeable here: the individual groups of themes are separated from one another by caesuras in the form of one- to two-bar general rests, which earned the symphony the derisive nickname "intermission symphony". That Sergei Prokofiev'sSymphonic Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra appears relatively seldom on concert programs because of the extraordinarily high demands that the work places on the soloists. The composer wanted to fully exploit the possibilities of the cello, both technically and musically, with the advice of none other than Mstislav Rostropovich. The solo instrument is relentlessly engaged in this Symphonic Concerto, completed in 1952, an entirely new composition of Prokofiev's earlier Op. 58 Cello Concerto of 1938, closely and inextricably linked to the orchestral part. In addition to the virtuoso passages, the concert also features numerous lyrical beauties and memorable melodies.
