Vom Ehrgeiz angestachelt, schrieb Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy im Auftrag des Leipziger Theaters in drei Tagen die Ouvertüre und eine Romanze zu Victor Hugos Rittertragödie Ruy Blas, die von Intrigen um die Liebegeschichte des gleichnamigen Kammerdieners zur Königin Maria Anna von Spanien handelt. In Giacomo Meyerbeers Kantate Gli amori di Teolinda beklagt die Schäferin Teolinda ihre unerfüllte Liebe zum Panflötisten Armidoro. Im Klarinettenpart verspottet dieser ihre Liebesbemühungen im Wettstreit mit Teolindas Koloraturen. Zur Entstehung von Brahms’ Sinfonie Nr. 3 ist nur wenig überliefert. Bei ihrer Uraufführung entbrannte ein Streit zwischen den Verfechtern der Absoluten Musik und der Neudeutschen Schule. Clara Schumann assoziierte mit der Musik den „geheimnisvollen Zauber des Waldlebens“.

Spurred on by ambition, Felix Mendelssohn wrote Bartholdy was commissioned by the Leipzig Theater to write the overture and a romance to Victor Hugo's knight tragedy Ruy Blas in three days , which deals with the intrigues of the eponymous valet's love story for Queen Maria Anna of Spain. In Giacomo Meyerbeer's cantata Gli amori di Teolindathe shepherdess Teolinda laments her unfulfilled love for the panflute player Armidoro. In the clarinet part, the latter taunts her love efforts in competition with Teolinda's coloraturas. Little is known about the composition of Brahms' Symphony No. 3 . When it was premiered, a dispute broke out between the advocates of Absolute Music and the New German School. Clara Schumann associated music with the "mysterious magic of forest life".
