GMD Sebastian Tewinkel has put together rhapsodies of the most varied origins and styles into a highly attractive programme.

Maurice Ravel's "Rhapsody espagnole" opens the concert evening. The work, completed in 1908, is the Frenchman's first major orchestral composition and is already a masterpiece, particularly in terms of instrumentation. Without making direct reference to Spanish folklore, Ravel creates a mystical and mysterious atmosphere. His music takes an imaginary journey to Andalusia or the Basque country where his mother comes from.

The Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 is one of Georges Enescu 's most popular creations and was first performed in Bucharest in 1903 under the direction of the composer. Their melodic material is borrowed from the folk music of the Carpathian region.

In his 1934 Rhapsody op. 43, Sergej Rachmaninoff took up and varied a famous theme by Niccoló Paganini . The fact that the famous devil's violinist is said to have sold his soul to the devil encouraged the Russian maestro to also integrate the "Dies irae" into the piece: the melody from the Latin requiem mass describes the Last Judgment.

The finale features George Gershwin 's Rhapsody in Blue, which beautifully blends jazz, blues and concert symphonic music. At the premiere, the composer himself sat at the piano. The American pianist Claire Huangci, who recently gave a guest performance at the Philharmonie with Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, is looking forward to the jazzy solo part!

Rhapsodien unterschiedlichster Herkunft und Stilistik hat GMD Sebastian Tewinkel zu einem höchst attraktiven Programm zusammengestellt.

Maurice Ravels „Rhapsody espagnole“ eröffnet den Konzertabend. Das 1908 vollendete Werk ist die erste größere Orchesterkomposition des Franzosen und schon ein Meisterstück, insbesondere hinsichtlich der Instrumentation. Ohne direkt auf spanische Folklore Bezug zu nehmen, erzeugt Ravel eine mystisch-geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre. Seine Musik unternimmt eine imaginäre Reise nach Andalusien bzw. in das Baskenland, aus dem seine Mutter stammt.

Die Rumänische Rhapsodie Nr. 1 gehört zu den populärsten Schöpfungen von Georges Enescu und wurde 1903 unter Leitung des Komponisten in Bukarest uraufgeführt. Ihr melodisches Material ist der Volksmusik aus dem Karpatenland entlehnt.

Ein berühmtes Thema von Niccoló Paganini hat Sergej Rachmaninow in seiner 1934 entstandenen Rhapsodie op. 43 aufgegriffen und variiert. Dass der berühmte Teufelsgeiger seine Seele an den Teufel verkauft haben soll, animierte den russischen Maestro dazu, auch das „Dies irae“ in das Stück zu integrieren: die aus der lateinischen Totenmesse stammende Melodie beschreibt das Jüngste Gericht.

Das Finale gehört George Gershwins „Rhapsody in Blue“, in der Jazz, Blues und konzertante Sinfonik wunderbar miteinander verschmelzen. Bei der Uraufführung saß der Komponist selbst am Klavier. Die amerikanische Pianistin Claire Huangci, die zuletzt mit Chopins 1. Klavierkonzert bei der Philharmonie gastierte, freut sich auf den jazzigen Solopart!
