Szövegkönyvét Francesco Maria Piave írta Byron The corsair című epikus költeménye alapján.

A kalóz Verdinek abban az alkotói periódusában keletkezett, amire „a gályarabság éveiként” szoktak hivatkozni. A zeneszerzőt elhalmozzák megrendelésekkel, 8 év alatt 13 operát komponál.

A szövegkönyv alapjául szolgáló Byron költemény a romantika korában hatalmas népszerűségnek örvendett. Verdi mellett megihlette Berliozt és a Giselle szerzőjét, Adamot is. A társadalom peremén rekedt, kitaszított ember a korszak kedvelt témája volt.  Verdi is előszeretettel tette meg operáinak főhősévé a kurtizánt, a testi hibával élő Rigolettót vagy éppen a kalózt.

Corrado, a kalózok vezére új megbízatást kap: Seid pasa ellen kell támadnia. A harc során Corrado kimenti Seid rabszolganőit az égő háremből. Elfogják, de a pasa kedvenc háremhölgye beleszeret, kiszabadítja és megöli a pasát. Corrado hű marad menyasszonyához, Medorához, aki viszont – miután a kalózok Corrado nélkül érnek haza – megmérgezi magát. Mikor Corrado értesül menyasszonya haláláról, a tengerbe veti magát.

The Pirate was created during Verdi's creative period, which is often referred to as "the years of galley slavery". The composer is inundated with orders, and in 8 years he composes 13 operas.

Byron's poem, which is the basis of the text book, was hugely popular in the Romantic era. In addition to Verdi, he also inspired Berlioz and the author of Giselle, Adam. The outcast, trapped on the fringes of society, was a popular theme of the era. Verdi also preferred to make the courtesan, Rigoletto living with a physical defect or even the pirate the protagonist of his operas.

Corrado, the leader of the pirates, receives a new assignment: he must attack Seid Pasha. During the fight, Corrado rescues Seid's slave women from the burning harem. He is captured, but the pasha's favorite harem lady falls in love with him, frees him, and kills the pasha. Corrado remains faithful to his fiancée, Medora, who poisons herself after the pirates arrive home without Corrado. When Corrado learns of his fiancée's death, he throws himself into the sea.
