Together with De Filmfabriek, Muziektheater Transparant is making a semi-scenic version of Béla Bartók's opera Blauwbaards Burcht.

The story of Bluebeard goes back to an old French legend about a wealthy duke who murders the women he marries and hides in his castle. The fairytale character and the archetypal elements made this work a source of inspiration for countless artists, especially librettists and composers. For example, Maurice Maeterlinck and Paul Dukas created the opera Ariane et Barbe-bleu (1907) together.   

When the Hungarian writer Béla Balàsz saw this work in Paris, he decided to write his own Hungarian version of Bluebeard. Béla Bartók, who had also been fascinated by the character Bluebeard for some time, composed his first and only opera to this libretto in 1911. However, it would be twenty years before the work could count on any acclaim. The main reason for this is the very innovative character of the work: there are only two characters, hardly any action and the chorus is missing. The innovation is mainly in the libretto, which came under the most intense fire. Instead of the action, the focus is now on the inner self of the characters, a shift that fits in with the general tendency to internalize in the dramatic literature of the early 20th century (Ibsen, Chekhov, Maeterlinck). This can be felt not only in the music and the libretto, but also in the place of action, Bluebeard's fortress, which is in fact not a real but a symbolic place: Bluebeard is his fortress. The quest of Judith, Bluebeard's last wife and co-star in the libretto, is therefore a journey to the core of Bluebeard's 'being'. A quest that is doomed to be fatal.  

Together with De Filmfabriek, Muziektheater Transparant is making a semi-scenic version of this opera. By means of light and video, a schizophrenic space is created, in which rooms can first look very attractive and then suddenly have a horrific view. Disintegrating images visualize the forbidden space behind the last closed door in Bluebeard's castle. It will be Muziektheater Transparant's first collaboration with deFilharmonie.

Samen met De Filmfabriek maakt Muziektheater Transparant een semi-scenische versie van Béla Bartóks opera Blauwbaards Burcht.

Het verhaal van Blauwbaard gaat terug op een oude Franse legende over een rijke hertog die de vrouwen waarmee hij huwt, vermoordt en verbergt in zijn kasteel. Het sprookjesachtige karakter en de archetypische elementen deden dit werk uitgroeien tot een inspiratiebron voor talloze kunstenaars, waaronder vooral librettisten en componisten. Zo creëerden Maurice Maeterlinck en Paul Dukas samen de opera Ariane et Barbe-bleu (1907).   

Toen de Hongaarse schrijver Béla Balàsz dit werk in Parijs te zien kreeg, vatte hij het plan op om zijn eigen Hongaarse versie van Blauwbaard te schrijven. Béla Bartók, die ook al geruime tijd gefascineerd was door het personage Blauwbaard, componeerde in 1911 op dit libretto zijn eerste en enige opera. Het zou echter twintig jaar duren voor het werk op enige bijval kon rekenen. De voornaamste reden daarvoor is het erg vernieuwende karakter van het werk: er zijn maar twee personages, nauwelijks handeling en het koor ontbreekt. De vernieuwing zit vooral in het libretto, dat het felst onder vuur kwam liggen. In plaats van de actie staat nu het innerlijk van de personages centraal, een verschuiving die past in de algemene tendens tot verinnerlijking in de dramatische literatuur van de vroege 20ste eeuw (Ibsen, Tsjechov, Maeterlinck). Dat is niet alleen in de muziek en het libretto voelbaar, maar ook bij de plaats van handeling, de burcht van Blauwbaard, die in feite geen werkelijke maar een symbolische plaats is: Blauwbaard is zijn burcht. De zoektocht van Judith, Blauwbaards laatste echtgenote en tegenspeelster in het libretto, is dan ook een tocht naar de kern van Blauwbaards ‘zijn’. Een zoektocht die gedoemd is om fataal af te lopen.  

Samen met De Filmfabriek maakt Muziektheater Transparant een semi-scenische versie van deze opera. Door middel van licht en video komt een schizofrene ruimte tot stand, waarin kamers er eerst heel bekoorlijk kunnen uitzien om vervolgens plots een gruwelijk uitzicht te krijgen. Desintegrerende beelden visualiseren de verboden ruimte achter de laatste gesloten deur in Blauwbaards burcht. Het wordt een eerste samenwerking van Muziektheater Transparant met deFilharmonie.
