La genesi

 

Il 10 maggio 1907, all'Opéra-Comique  di Parigi, tra il pubblico che assisteva alla prima rappresentazione di Ariane et Barbe-bleue composta da Paul Dukas su un adattamento a libretto dell'omonima pièce in tre atti che Maurice Maeterlinck (1901) aveva tratto dalla novella di Charles Parrault, c'erano anche Béla Balázs e Zoltán Kodály. Se quest'ultimo commentò lapidariamente: «libretto molto interessante, cattiva la  musica», Balázs, ispirato proprio dalla pièce di Maeterlinck, scrisse, senza concepirlo inizialmente come libretto, il dramma A Kékszakállú hercegvára (Il castello di Barbablù), che egli pubblicò nel mese di giugno del 1910 sulla rivista «Színjáték» con una dedica sia a Bartók che a Kodály. I due compositori ebbero modo di conoscere meglio il testo di Balázs in occasione di una lettura organizzata dalla rivista «Nyugat», della quale Kodály ci ha lasciato un'interessante testimonianza:

 

"Béla Balázs non si preoccupava di sapere chi di noi avrebbe messo in musica il testo e si rimetteva a noi per la scelta. Il contenuto del testo mi era talmente estraneo che personalmente non vi avrei mai pensato, mentre Bartók lo sentì subito come molto vicino a lui. […]. Penso che abbia desiderato di metterlo in musica dal primo momento in cui l'ha letto, cosa che del resto avrebbe fatto poco tempo dopo".

 

Alla fine sarebbe stato proprio Bartók a cimentarsi nell'impresa di comporre l'opera cercando, in questo modo, di rinverdire i fasti del teatro musicale ungherese dopo i successi ottenuti da Ferenc Erkel con Hunyadi László e Bánk Bán rispettivamente nel 1844 e nel 1861. Da allora nessun altro compositore e nemmeno Erkel, che aveva dato un tono ungherese ai suoi lavori con un linguaggio intriso di verbunkos, era riuscito a ripetere questi successi e, quindi, a trovare la strada di un vero e proprio teatro ungherese. Per questa ragione fu una vera e propria sfida quella che si prospettava a Bartók, il quale avrebbe dovuto, dunque, inventarsi uno stile, una drammaturgia e una prosodia nuovi che, facendo leva anche sulle recenti scoperte della tradizione popolare, fossero in grado di realizzare al meglio gli ottosillabi di Balázs. Di questa sfida e delle difficoltà ad essa connesse Bartók informò in una lettera del 27 marzo 1911 Frederick Delius:

 

"Mi sono appena lanciato in un'impresa difficile - nella fattispecie un'opera in un atto. Io non ho mai composto fino ad ora liriche - lei può immaginarsi quanto il testo - all'inizio - abbia potuto crearmi delle difficoltà. Ora va un po' meglio. E penso che la musica è qualcosa che lei potrà apprezzare".

 

Nonostante le difficoltà, la partitura fu pronta il 20 settembre 1911 nei termini fissati per partecipare al concorso Ferenc Erkel, il cui premio era costituito da 3000 corone. Bartók non vinse né questo né un successivo concorso che era stato bandito dalla casa editrice Rózsavölgyi, al quale partecipò dopo aver apportato alcune modifiche alla partitura. Nel secondo caso l'opera, che fu giudicata inadatta alle scene, non passò nemmeno la prova preliminare in quanto a finire sul banco degli imputati fu il libretto che, secondo quanto affermato dal regista Sándor Hevesi, che fece parte della giuria, era privo di elementi drammatici, statico e con personaggi non ben caratterizzati. L'opera, alla quale nel 1917 Bartók aggiunse un nuovo finale,  avrebbe calcato le scene  a Budapest il 24 maggio 1918 con Oszkár Kálmán e Olga Haselbeck e con Egisto Tango sul podio. Erano passati ben sette anni di amarezze e delusioni, di cui una testimonianza è costituita da una lettera di Bartók alla moglie,  nella quale si legge: «Ora so che non la potrò mai ascoltare in questa vita. Mi avevi chiesto di eseguirla per te, ma ho paura che non sarò in grado di farlo. Farò sì che possiamo almeno piangere di questo insieme», ma questa première fu un successo tale da aprire al compositore le porte dell'Universal Edition. Zoltán Kodály, recensendo l'opera sulla rivista «Nyugat», scrisse:

 

"L'intento di Bartók era quello di affrancare la lingua e di rinforzare l'inflessione naturale della voce per renderla musicale; egli ha così dato un impulso decisivo alla nascita di uno stile recitativo ungherese. È la prima opera, sulle scene ungheresi, nella quale il canto risuona da un capo all'altro con accenti ungheresi omogenei e senza intoppi.

Questo modo di mettere in musica, in cui ogni parola e ogni frase sono scolpite in modo da togliere il fiato, rivela le più piccole asperità del testo".

 

In seguito all’esilio, per ragioni politiche, del librettista l’opera non fu più rappresentata in Ungheria fino al 1936 mentre alcune performances ebbero luogo a Francoforte (1922) e a Berlino (1929). Dopo la prima italiana avvenuta il 5 maggio 1938 al Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, per tutto il Novecento l’opera è stata rappresentata nei maggiori teatri italiani, in America, in Argentina, in Francia e in Inghilterra.

 

La trama

 

La vicenda, che si svolge in un periodo non ben definito nella sala buia di un castello con sette porte chiuse, ha per protagonisti Barbablù e l’ultima moglie Judith.

Barbablù giunge al castello, immerso nell’oscurità, con la nuova moglie alla quale offre, in un primo momento, la possibilità di andar via. La donna, però, è decisa a rimanere chiedendogli con insistenza di aprire le porte chiuse in modo che la luce possa illuminare l’interno. Barbablù rifiuta ma la donna, con le sue pressanti richieste, riesce a prevalere. All’apertura della prima porta si rivela agli occhi di Judith la camera della tortura con delle macchie di sangue mentre la seconda camera è un deposito di armi e la terza contiene molte ricchezze. Spinta da Barbablù, la donna scopre, dietro la quarta porta, un bellissimo giardino e dietro la quinta una finestra che si affaccia sul vasto regno di Barbablù, ma alla luce del sole vede che tutto è macchiato di sangue. A questo punto Barbablù la prega di non continuare nella sua esplorazione ma Judith è irremovibile e apre la sesta porta scoprendo un lago d’argento corrispondente ad un lago di lacrime. Infine, ignorando le suppliche di Barbablù e accusandolo di avere ucciso le mogli precedenti delle quali ha visto il sangue e le lacrime, si accinge ad aprire la settima porta, sicura che dietro ci siano i loro corpi. Aperta la porta, nella camera scopre tre delle mogli di Barbablù ancora vive e ornate di gioielli davanti alle quali l’uomo, assalito dall’emozione, si inginocchia, tessendo le loro lodi chiamandole «la moglie dell’alba, del mezzogiorno e del tramonto». Rivolgendosi, poi, a Judith, la chiama «la moglie della notte». La donna è terrorizzata e lo prega di smettere ma egli la copre di gioielli e la chiude insieme alle altre nella settima camera rimanendo solo mentre il castello piomba nell’oscurità.

 

La musica

 

In quest'opera, come nella maggior parte della produzione di Bartók, si può notare l'adozione da parte del compositore del cosiddetto sistema assiale che costituisce la base della sua organizzazione armonica ed è stato illustrato in un importante saggio di Ernö Lendvai, apparso in Italia sulla «Rivista Musicale Italiana» nel 1982 con il titolo La sezione aurea nelle strutture musicali bartokiane dove vengono analizzati i principi armonici e formali che presiedono alla composizione della musica del compositore ungherese. Il sistema assiale è derivato dall'armonia funzionale, in quanto i suoni e le tonalità vengono inseriti in un contesto più ampio che li riconduce agi assi della tonica, della dominante e della sottodominante. Senza entrare in questioni eccessivamente tecniche si può affermare che l'opera si svolge nell'intero asse della tonica dal momento che parte, dal punto di vista armonico in fa diesis, trattato in modo modale per raggiungere il do nella parte centrale, prima di tornare, descrivendo un ponte a livello macroformale, al fa diesis nel finale che, secondo alcuni critici, rappresenta le tenebre, in cui sono avvolti il castello e l'anima di Barbablù all'inizio e alla fine dell'opera, in contrapposizione alla luce (do) della parte centrale. All'interno di questa macrostruttura modale, possiamo trovare passi che adottano un linguaggio armonico politonale, mentre in altri come, ad esempio, in occasione dell'apertura della terza porta, tonale. Un altro elemento simbolico è costituito dall'intervallo di seconda che, secondo alcuni critici, rappresenta il sangue, dal momento che appare tutte le volte che esso viene evocato sulla scena, mentre la scrittura vocale, appassionata e rispettosa della musicalità della lingua ungherese, può, tuttavia, risultare ostica ad un cantante non di madrelingua.

Il castello di Barbablù (The Castle of the Bluebeard Duke), opera in un atto su libretto by Béla Balász

The genesis

 

On May 10, 1907, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, among the audience attending the first performance of Ariane et Barbe-bleue composed by Paul Dukas on a libretto adaptation of the pièce of the same name in three acts that Maurice Maeterlinck (1901) had based on the short story by Charles Parrault, Béla Balázs and Zoltán Kodály were also there. If the latter succinctly commented: «very interesting libretto, bad music», Balázs, inspired precisely by Maeterlinck's play , wrote, without initially conceiving it as a libretto, the drama A Kékszakállú hercegvára ( Bluebeard's Castle), which he published in June 1910 in the magazine «Színjáték» with a dedication to both Bartók and Kodály. The two composers got to know Balázs' text better during a reading organized by the magazine «Nyugat», of which Kodály has left us an interesting testimony:

 

"Béla Balázs did not bother to know which of us would set the text to music and deferred to us for the choice. The content of the text was so foreign to me that I personally would never have thought of it, while Bartók immediately felt it as very close to him. [...]. I think he wanted to set it to music from the first moment he read it, which he would have done shortly after".

 

In the end, it would have been Bartók himself who attempted to compose the opera, thus trying to revive the glories of Hungarian musical theater after the successes achieved by Ferenc Erkel with Hunyadi László and Bánk Bán respectively in 1844 and 1861. Since then no other composer and not even Erkel, who had given a Hungarian tone to his works with a language steeped in verbunkos, had managed to repeat these successes and thus find the way to a real Hungarian theater. For this reason, the one facing Bartók was a real challenge, who would therefore have had to invent a new style, dramaturgy and prosody which, also relying on the recent discoveries of popular tradition, were able to realize at best the octosyllables of Balázs. Of this challenge and the difficulties connected with it Bartók informed Frederick Delius in a letter dated March 27, 1911:

 

"I have just embarked on a difficult undertaking - in this case a one-act opera. I have never composed lyrics up to now - you can imagine how much the text - at the beginning - could have created difficulties for me. Now go a little bit better. And I think music is something she will appreciate."

 

Despite the difficulties, the score was ready on September 20, 1911 in the deadline set to participate in the Ferenc Erkel competition, the prize for which was 3,000 crowns. Bartók did not win this or a subsequent competition that had been held by the Rózsavölgyi publishing house, in which he entered after making some changes to the score. In the second case, the work, which was judged unsuitable for the stage, did not even pass the preliminary test as what ended up in the dock was the libretto which, according to what was stated by the director Sándor Hevesi, who was part of the jury, was devoid of dramatic elements, static and with characters that are not well characterized. The opera, to which Bartók added a new ending in 1917, would have trod the stage in Budapest on May 24, 1918 with Oszkár Kálmán and Olga Haselbeck and with Egisto Tango on the podium. A good seven years of bitterness and disappointment had gone by, evidence of which is provided by a letter from Bartók to his wife, in which we read: «Now I know that I will never be able to listen to it in this life. You asked me to do it for you, but I'm afraid I won't be able to. I'll make sure we can at least cry about this together,” but this onepremière was such a success that it opened the doors to the Universal Edition for the composer. Zoltán Kodály, reviewing the work in the magazine «Nyugat», wrote:

 

"Bartók's intention was to liberate the language and to reinforce the natural inflection of the voice to make it musical; thus he gave a decisive impulse to the birth of a Hungarian acting style. It is the first opera, on the Hungarian stage, in the which the chant rings out from end to end with homogeneous and smoothly Hungarian accents.

This way of setting to music, in which every word and every phrase is carved in a way that takes your breath away, reveals the smallest roughness of the text".

 

Following the exile, for political reasons, of the librettist, the work was no longer staged in Hungary until 1936, while some performances took place in Frankfurt (1922) and Berlin (1929). After the Italian premiere which took place on 5 May 1938 at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, throughout the twentieth century the opera was performed in the major Italian theatres, in America, in Argentina, in France and in England.

 

The plot

 

The story, which takes place in an undefined period in the dark room of a castle with seven closed doors, has Bluebeard and his last wife Judith as protagonists.

Bluebeard arrives at the castle, immersed in darkness, with his new wife to whom he initially offers the possibility of leaving. However, the woman is determined to stay, asking him insistently to open the closed doors so that the light can illuminate the interior. Bluebeard refuses but the woman, with her pressing requests, manages to prevail. Upon opening the first door, the torture chamber with bloodstains is revealed to Judith's eyes while the second chamber is a weapons depot and the third contains many riches. Prompted by Bluebeard, the woman discovers, behind the fourth door, a beautiful garden and behind the fifth, a window overlooking Bluebeard's vast kingdom, but in the sunlight she sees that everything is stained with blood. At this point Bluebeard begs her not to continue her exploration but Judith is adamant and opens the sixth door, discovering a silver lake corresponding to a lake of tears. Finally, ignoring Bluebeard's pleas and accusing him of having killed previous wives whose blood and tears she has seen, she prepares to open the seventh door, certain that their bodies are behind it. She opens the door, in her room she discovers three of Bluebeard's wives still alive and adorned with jewels in front of which the man, overcome with emotion, kneels down, singing their praises calling them "the wife of dawn, noon and the sunset." Turning, then, to Judith, he calls her "the wife of the night".

 

The music

 

In this work, as in most of Bartók's production, one can note the composer's adoption of the so-called axial system which forms the basis of his harmonic organization and was illustrated in an important essay by Ernö Lendvai, which appeared in Italy in the «Rivista Musicale Italiana» in 1982 with the title The golden section in Bartok's musical structureswhere the harmonic and formal principles governing the composition of the Hungarian composer's music are analysed. The axial system is derived from functional harmony, as sounds and tonalities are inserted into a broader context which leads them back to the tonic, dominant and subdominant axes. Without going into excessively technical questions, it can be said that the work takes place along the entire tonic axis since it starts, from the harmonic point of view, in F sharp , treated in a modal way to reach C in the central part, before returning , describing a bridge at the macroformal level, to F sharpin the finale which, according to some critics, represents darkness, in which Bluebeard's castle and soul are enveloped at the beginning and end of the work, as opposed to the light ( do ) of the central part. Within this modal macrostructure, we can find passages that adopt a polytonal harmonic language, while in others, such as, for example, on the occasion of the opening of the third door, tonal. Another symbolic element is constituted by the interval of a second which, according to some critics, represents blood, since it appears every time it is evoked on stage, while the vocal writing, passionate and respectful of the musicality of the Hungarian language, can , however, be difficult for a non-native singer.
