The two greatest and most ambitious works of sacred music remained unfinished - the Requiem and the Mass in C minor. Written in 1782 at the beginning of his time in Vienna, this impressive »Missa solemnis« is one of the most important settings of the classical period. In this inspired work, Mozart incorporated both a strict art of composition, trained in Bach and Handel, and great melodic emphasis. It gives him excellent testimony as a composer and is in no way inferior to the operas and instrumental works of the 1780s in terms of inventiveness.

Die beiden größten und ambitioniertesten kirchenmusikalischen Werke blieben unvollendet – das Requiem und die Messe in c-Moll. 1782, zu Beginn seiner Wiener Zeit entstanden, gehört diese eindrucksvolle »Missa solemnis« zu den wohl bedeutendsten Vertonungen der klassischen Zeit. Mozart hat in dieses inspirierte Werk sowohl eine strenge, an Bach und Händel geschulte Satzkunst als auch große melodische Emphase einfließen lassen.
