A tough nut, one that our critics’ feeble little teeth cannot crack. This is how Mahler introduced his Sixth Symphony, his darkest work, which he aptly named 'Tragic'. It stands as one of his greatest masterpieces; the product of tremendous effort. The meaning of the three blows struck by an immense hammer, coupled with sounds of cowbells in the orchestra, has sparked much discussion. They symbolise both the inevitability of fate and a being in search of solitude rising above the noise of the world. Although his statement is bleak, Mahler doesn’t stop there. After this profound realisation, he gets back up and, like his music, he goes on. It is his most personal and prophetic work, anticipating the tragedies that he and the world will once again have to bear, just one decade before the onset of the Great War.

Une noix dure à casser pour les faibles dents de nos critiques. C’est ainsi que Mahler présentait sa Sixième Symphonie, son œuvre la plus pessimiste qu’il nommera 'Tragique'. C’est surtout un de ses plus grands chefs-d’œuvre qui lui coûtera un énorme effort. La signification des trois coups frappés par un immense marteau, comme la présence de cloches de vaches dans l’orchestre ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre, ils sont à la fois le symbole de la fatalité du destin et de la recherche de la solitude d’un être prenant de la hauteur par rapport aux rumeurs du monde. Si le constat est rude, Mahler ne s’arrêtera pas là et sa vie comme sa création continueront après ce formidable constat. C’est son œuvre la plus personnelle et la plus prophétique des tragédies qui viendront encore s’abattre sur ses épaules et sur le monde juste dix ans avant le début de la Grande Guerre.
