When one of Germany's most famous filmmakers and inspiring opera director unleashes her creativity on a rarely performed Handel opera, the result is a "mixture of dancers and singers, comedy and pathos" (The Times).
"Admeto", one of Handel's most popular operas of his lifetime, was first performed in London in January 1727. Doris Dörrie, whose Japanese-inspired feature film "Cherry Blossoms - Hanami" was a hit at the German box office and won several international awards, turns back to her beloved Japan in this production.
Flowing robes, translucent panels and the involvement of Japan's Mamu Dance Theater and its choreographer Tadashi Endo add an atmospheric dimension to the work, whose lead roles were written for a popular castrati and two rival prima donnas. Sensitively staged for video by Agnes Méth, who had already worked with Dörrie on Mozart's "La finta giardiniera" at the Salzburg Festival, the opera is performed by Nicholas McGegan's Göttingen Festival Orchestra on period instruments.
For this production, which was a co-production of the International Handel Festival in Göttingen and the Edinburgh International Festival to mark the 250th anniversary of Handel's death, Doris Dörrie received the Edinburgh Festival's prestigious Herald Angel Award.
