The love story of Egyptian military leader Radam and slave Aida, who is in fact the daughter of Ethiopian King Amonasr, still appeals to opera audiences with grand narratives and crowd scenes as well as intimate personal drama. Aida must choose between loyalty to her homeland and love for the man who belongs to the oppressors of her nation. Radames finds himself in love and duty when he finally betrays his land for Aida. Giuseppe Verdi wrote to Aidabased on a brief operatic concept by the French Egyptologist August Mariett, who drafted it at the behest of the Egyptian Vice-King on the occasion of the opening of the Suez Canal. Verdi's concept immediately caught the eye and he paid great attention to the preparation of the work. He even went directly to Egypt to get his own idea of ​​the country and its culture. In Milan, he had ancient Egyptian-shaped pipes, so-called Aids , made according to his drawings , which he used in perhaps the most famous choral scene ever, the Triumphal March .

The premiere of the current production took place at the State Opera in 1994. It is the longest-running title in the current repertoire of the State Opera and at the same time one of the ensemble's most successful productions. She also met with great acclaim during two tours of the Prague State Opera around Japan.

Příběh lásky egyptského vojevůdce Radama a otrokyně Aidy, která je ve skutečnosti dcerou etiopského krále Amonasra, oslovuje stále operní publikum velkolepou výpravností a davovými scénami stejně jako intimním osobním dramatem. Aida se musí rozhodnout mezi věrností své vlasti a láskou k muži, který patří k utlačovatelům jejího národa. Mezi láskou a povinností se ocitne i Radames, když nakonec kvůli Aidě zradí svou zem. Giuseppe Verdi napsal Aidu na základě stručného operního konceptu francouzského egyptologa Augusta Marietta, který jej zpracoval na objednávku egyptského vicekrále u příležitosti otevření Suezského kanálu. Verdiho koncept okamžitě zaujal a přípravě díla věnoval velkou péči. Vypravil se dokonce přímo do Egypta, aby získal vlastní představu o této zemi a její kultuře. V Miláně si nechal vyrobit podle svých nákresů i staroegyptsky tvarované trubky, tzv. aidovky, které uplatnil ve snad nejslavnější sborové scéně vůbec, Triumfálním pochodu.

Premiéra současné inscenace se ve Státní opeře uskutečnila roku 1994. Jde o nejdéle nasazený titul současného repertoáru Státní opery a zároveň i o jednu z nejúspěšnějších inscenací souboru. Setkala se s velkým ohlasem i při dvou turné Státní opery Praha po Japonsku.
