Handel's Alcina premiered at Covent Garden in London on 16 April 1735 to enormous success. Two years earlier the composer had had to leave the King's Theatre, taken over by a rival company, to move to the new London theatre. There he gave birth to his latest works, including Alcina , born with the intention of excelling on the productions of the rival company and therefore particularly accurate and sumptuous in the preparations. At Covent Garden Handel was also able to have a corps de ballet, which is why he supplemented the score with dance numbers and choral episodes along the lines of French opera. The anonymous libretto of the opera - which sees the theme of the incantation of love at its center - was inspired by canto VII of the Orlando furioso and byThe island of Alcina, a work by Riccardo Broschi. The sorceress Alcina, thanks to a spell, keeps the knight Ruggiero tied to her on an enchanted island, but thanks to the intervention of Bradamante Ruggiero will regain consciousness and abandon the sorceress in her desperation. Among apparitions, magic, disguises and visible scene changes, the arias of the soloists obviously stand out, the true beating heart of Baroque opera. In fact, for the sorceress and her beloved, the composer created some of the most popular arias such as "Ombre pallide", sung by Alcina or "Verdi prati, selve amene", sung by Ruggiero.

Alcina di Händel debuttò al Covent Garden di Londra il 16 aprile 1735 riscuotendo un enorme successo. Due anni prima il compositore aveva dovuto lasciare il King’s Theatre, preso in gestione da un’impresa rivale, per trasferirsi nel nuovo teatro londinese. Lì diede vita alle sue ultime opere, tra cui Alcina, nate con l’intento di primeggiare sulle produzioni dell’impresa rivale e pertanto particolarmente curate e sontuose negli allestimenti. Al Covent Garden Händel poté disporre anche di un corpo di ballo, ragion per cui integrò la partitura con numeri di danza ed episodi corali sulla falsariga dell’opera francese. Il libretto anonimo dell’opera - che vede al centro il tema dell’incantamento d’amore - era ispirato al canto VII dell’Orlando furioso e a L’isola di Alcina, un’opera di Riccardo Broschi. La maga Alcina, grazie a un sortilegio, tiene legato a sé il cavaliere Ruggiero in un’isola incantata, ma grazie all’intervento di Bradamante Ruggiero riacquisterà coscienza e abbandonerà la maga nella disperazione. Tra apparizioni, magie, travestimenti e cambi di scena a vista svettano ovviamente le arie dei solisti, vero cuore pulsante dell’opera barocca. Per la maga e il suo amato il compositore realizzò infatti alcune tra le arie più apprezzate come “Ombre pallide”, cantata da Alcina o “Verdi prati, selve amene”, intonata da Ruggiero.
