Richard Strauss en Christianne Stotijn: een perfecte combinatie. Haar heldere mezzosopraanstem past prachtig bij de twintigste-eeuwse romantiek van Strauss. Die komt vooral tot zijn recht in zijn liederen: niet de grootsheid van de orkestwerken of de opera’s, maar de intensiteit van poëzie op de vierkante centimeter. Christianne Stotijn zong ze talloze malen tijdens recitals wereldwijd en maakte er een schitterende opname van waarover de pers schreef: ‘Haar expressie en aandacht voor de nuances in de tekst zijn absoluut eerste klas’. Ze zingt ze met Phion voor het eerst met orkest in Strauss’ eigen arrangementen, waarmee een grote wens van haar in vervulling gaat.

Nietzsche vertaald door Strauss
De uitdrukking ‘het boek was beter’ gaat hier niet op. Want waar Also sprach Zarathustra van Nietzsche over het ontwaken der mensheid lastig is om te lezen, is de muzikale vertaling van Strauss in zijn gelijknamige symfonische gedicht zo toegankelijk en beeldend dat elke luisteraar er meteen door gegrepen wordt. Voor dit meesterwerk staat Phion onder leiding van de Singaporese dirigent Kahchun Wong, chef-dirigent van de Nürnberger Symphoniker en vaste gastdirigent van het Philharmonisch Orkest van Japan. Als opening dirigeert hij Phion in de theatermuziek die de jonge Mozart schreef bij Thamos. Het toneelstuk is volledig vergeten, maar de sprankelende muziek van Mozart spreekt nog steeds tot de verbeelding.

Richard Strauss and Christianne Stotijn: a perfect combination. Her clear mezzo-soprano voice fits beautifully with Strauss' twentieth-century romanticism. This comes into its own in his songs: not the grandeur of the orchestral works or the operas, but the intensity of poetry per square centimetre. Christianne Stotijn sang them countless times in recitals worldwide and made a beautiful recording about which the press wrote: 'Her expression and attention to the nuances in the text are absolutely first class'. She sings them with Phion for the first time with an orchestra in Strauss' own arrangements, fulfilling a great wish of hers.

Nietzsche translated by Strauss
The expression 'the book was better' does not apply here. Because while Nietzsche's Also sprach Zarathustra about the awakening of humanity is difficult to read, Strauss' musical translation in his symphonic poem of the same name is so accessible and visual that every listener is immediately captivated by it. For this masterpiece, Phion is conducted by Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong, chief conductor of the Nürnberger Symphoniker and principal guest conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. As an opening , he conducts Phion in the theater music that the young Mozart wrote for Thamos . The play has been completely forgotten, but Mozart's sparkling music still captures the imagination.
