Opera seria in two acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Libretto by Felice Romani. Musical direction, Giuliano Carella and staging, Marie Louise Bischofberger. With Ermonela Jaho (Anna Bolena), Kate Aldrich (Giovanna Seymour), Orchestra and Chorus of the Toulon Opera. Anna Bolena is part, with Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux, of the famous Donizetian trilogy of queens of the Tudor era. Created triumphantly in Milan in 1830, by the famous Giuditta Pasta, the work nevertheless fell into oblivion at the end of the 19th century. It was not until 1957 and Maria Callas that this masterpiece of romantic bel canto returned to the repertoire.

Donizetti - Anna Bolena - Toulon Opera

The tragic destiny of Anne Boleyn (1500-1536), second wife of King Henry VIII of England, beheaded for misdeeds she had not committed, inspired Gaetano Donizetti and his brilliant librettist Felice Romani to create a conductor - a romantic work, a miracle of balance between the art of “bel canto” and the theatrical density of the characters.
Its creation, in 1830 in Milan, was moreover a memorable success, even if Anna Bolena , of a formidable vocal requirement, was then relatively forgotten until Maria Callas revived her in 1957.
After having triumphed in Norma at the Met and in Traviata in Paris, the Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka makes her debut in Bordeaux in the title role. The director Marie-Louise Bischofberger, wife and collaborator of the late Luc Bondy (whose appointed scenographer, Erich Wonder, we find), orchestrates this tragedy with absolute lyricism.

La destinée tragique d’Anne Boleyn (1500-1536), seconde épouse du roi Henri VIII d’Angleterre, décapitée pour des méfaits qu’elle n’avait pas commis, a inspiré à Gaetano Donizetti et à son brillant librettiste Felice Romani un chef-d’œuvre romantique, miracle d’équilibre entre l’art du « bel canto » et la densité théâtrale des personnages.
Sa création, en 1830 à Milan, fut d’ailleurs un succès mémorable, même si Anna Bolena, d’une exigence vocale redoutable, fut ensuite relativement oubliée jusqu’à ce que Maria Callas la ressuscite en 1957.
Après avoir triomphé en Norma au Met et en Traviata à Paris, la soprano lettone Marina Rebeka effectue à Bordeaux ses débuts dans le rôle-titre. La metteure en scène Marie-Louise Bischofberger, épouse et collaboratrice du regretté Luc Bondy (dont on retrouve le scénographe attitré, Erich Wonder), orchestre cette tragédie au lyrisme absolu.
