ANTE LUCEM (Before Dawn) is a chamber opera that was born around the Seven romances on poems by Aleksandr Blok op. 127 by Dmitry Shostakovich. Although it is a score that the Russian composer wrote for soprano and a small instrumental ensemble, it lends itself particularly to a theatrical reinterpretation, as indeed happens to various compositions by the late Shostakovich (the Six Poems by Marina Tsvetaeva, the suite on verses by Michelangelo, even the Symphony n.14, etc.). The scenic writing carried out in this version by the Teatro del Lemming superimposes the articulated language of the theater on the music: the physicality of the actors, the poetic word, the symbolic language of the images, therefore transform the chamber composition into a complex Opera with a strong visual impact.

It is night and we are waiting for a revelation. A dreamy atmosphere dominates, a diffuse misty texture. Glimpses open on mysterious and evanescent scenarios, pervaded by melancholy and enigmas. An intimate and evocative space, all the more current in this pandemic era: a song thrown into the darkness of the night awaiting the release of a new dawn.

ANTE LUCEM (Prima dell’Alba) è un’Opera da camera che nasce attorno alle Sette romanze su poesie di Aleksandr Blok op. 127 di Dmitrij Šostakovič. Per quanto si tratti di una partitura che il compositore russo scrisse per soprano e un piccolo ensemble strumentale, essa si presta particolarmente ad una rilettura teatrale, come per altro accade a diverse composizioni dell'ultimo Šostakovič (le Sei poesie di Marina Cvetaeva, la suite su versi di Michelangelo, persino la Sinfonia n.14, ecc.). La scrittura scenica operata in questa versione dal Teatro del Lemming, sovrappone alla musica il linguaggio articolato del teatro: la fisicità degli attori, la parola poetica, il linguaggio simbolico delle immagini, trasformano perciò la composizione da camera in un’Opera complessa e dal forte impatto visivo.

È notte e siamo come in attesa di una rivelazione. Domina un’atmosfera da sogno, una diffusa trama nebbiosa. Si aprono squarci su scenari misteriosi ed evanescenti, pervasi di malinconia e di enigmi. Uno spazio intimo e evocativo, tanto più attuale in quest'epoca di pandemia: un canto gettato nell'oscurità della notte in attesa della liberazione di una nuova alba.
