In the north of Greenland, at the heart of nature, the ship of an expedition group freezes. Previously, its members had made a sensational find: a woman frozen in the ice. After thawing, she actually comes back to life and reacts confused at first, but then one day reveals her secret: she was once sacrificed by her people, who were able to survive a sudden cold snap. Through sabotage, the ship loses all connections to the outside world; the crew and the members of the expedition are on their own - and helplessly at the mercy of each other. At the end there is a questionable, yet executed death sentence. Was it murder or "just" another victim? Necessary or sacrilegious?

anthropocene, premiered in Glasgow in January 2019, is the name of a fictional research vessel, an iconic title that immediately tells the story of the forces at play: nature's ecosystems influenced by humans. Involved by their menacingly unpredictable development, they form more than the backdrop for a human drama that gets a special kick from a mystery effect.

Scottish composer Stuart MacRae has collaborated with librettist Louise Welsh for the fourth time on Anthropocene. Both were inspired by films like Alien and Sunshine , but also by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Shakespeare's The Tempest. Current events such as climate change and archaic elements such as sacrifice give the work its special atmosphere, which is decisively supported by MacRae's musical architecture.

Im Norden Grönlands, am Nabel der Natur, friert das Schiff einer Expeditionsgruppe ein. Zuvor hatten deren Mitglieder einen sensatio­nellen Fund gemacht: eine im Eis eingefrorene Frau. Nach dem Auftauen erwacht sie tatsäch­lich zu neuem Leben und reagiert zunächst verwirrt, gibt dann eines Tages aber ihr Ge­heimnis preis: Einst wurde sie von ihrem Volk geopfert, das dadurch einen plötzlich einbre­chenden Kälteschub überleben konnte. Durch Sabotage verliert das Schiff alle Verbindungen zur Außenwelt; die Crew und die Mitglieder der Expedition sind auf sich gestellt – und einander hilflos ausgeliefert. Am Schluss steht ein frag­würdiges, gleichwohl vollstrecktes Todesurteil. War es Mord oder »nur« ein erneutes Opfer? Notwendig oder frevlerisch?

Anthropocene, im Januar 2019 in Glasgow uraufgeführt, ist als Name eines fiktiven Forschungsschiffs ein symbolträchtiger Titel, der sofort miterzählt, welche Mächte hier im Spiel sind: die vom Menschen beeinflussten Ökosysteme der Natur. Durch ihre bedrohlich­ unvorhersehbare Entwicklung involviert, bilden sie mehr als die Kulisse für ein menschliches Drama, das durch einen Mystery­-Effekt einen speziellen Kick erhält.

Der schottische Komponist Stuart MacRae arbeitete für Anthropocene bereits zum vierten Mal mit der Librettistin Louise Welsh zusammen. Beide ließen sich von Filmen wie Alien und Sunshine inspirieren, aber auch von Mary Shelleys Frankenstein sowie Shakespeares Der Sturm. Aktuelles wie der Klimawandel und Archaisches wie eine Opferung verleihen dem Werk seine besondere Atmosphäre, die von MacRaes musikalischer Architektur entscheidend getragen wird.
