Antigona, de dochter van Oedipus, begraaft haar vermoorde broer Polyneikes tegen de wil van haar oom Creonte.

Bij Sophokles eindigt de tragedie in een waar bloedbad en wordt Antigone levend begraven. Componist Tommaso Traetta en librettist Marco Coltellini schreven in 1772 een geheel vernieuwde Antigona. In hun versie sterft de titelheldin geen gewelddadige dood. Creonte vergeeft de jonge rebelse vrouw en verbindt haar in een huwelijk aan zijn zoon Emone.

Alles in deze barokopera ademt jeugd uit: Antigona, haar zus Ismene en haar verloofde Emone zijn op een permanente ontdekkingsreis, die zich niet laat beteugelen door angst voor de dood. Eerder stimuleert die hen om des compromislozer te vechten tegen de conventies van het wettige gezag en de gevestigde orde.
Na een succesvolle voorstellingenreeks in het kader van de Culturele Hoofdsteden Brugge en Salamanca (2002) werd de productie – in samenwerking met De Munt – gepresenteerd in het Brusselse Kaaitheater (26-27 & 29 maart 2003) en nadien in deSingel in Antwerpen (2-3 april 2003).

At Sophocles, the tragedy ends in a veritable massacre and Antigone is buried alive. Composer Tommaso Traetta and librettist Marco Coltellini wrote a completely renewed Antigona in 1772 . In their version, the title heroine does not die a violent death. Creonte forgives the young rebellious woman and marries her to his son Emone.

Everything in this baroque opera exudes youth: Antigona, her sister Ismene and her fiancé Emone are on a permanent journey of discovery, unbridled by fear of death. Rather, it encourages them to fight all the more uncompromisingly against the conventions of legal authority and the establishment.
After a successful series of performances in the context of the Cultural Capitals of Bruges and Salamanca (2002), the production - in collaboration with De Munt - was presented in the Kaaitheater in Brussels (26-27 & 29 March 2003) and afterwards in deSingel in Antwerp (2- Apr 3, 2003).
