Weinig werken hebben de muziekgeschiedenis zo diepgaand beïnvloed als Wagners muziekdrama Tristan und Isolde. Chef-dirigent en Wagnerspecialist Antony Hermus voert een 75 minuten durend orkestraal arrangement op van de Nederlandse componist Henk de Vlieger. Dat wordt, speciaal voor dit concert, uitgebreid met het originele liefdesduet uit het tweede bedrijf, en zowel Tristans monoloog als Isoldes Liebestod uit het laatste bedrijf. De Finse sopraan Miina-Liisa Värelä kruipt daarbij in de huid van Isolde en de Amerikaanse stertenor Ben Gulley zingt de rol van Tristan.

Keltische mythen rond de figuur van Tristan – een ridder uit de wereld van Koning Arthur – inspireerden Wagner tot het componeren van misschien wel het meest intense liefdesdrama aller tijden. Even belangrijk als Gottfried von Straßburgs roman in verzen Tristan was echter de filosofie van Arthur Schopenhauer. Volgens deze filosoof schuilt ‘verlossing’ enkel in de ontkenning van de wil tot leven. Wagner verklankt dit op magistrale wijze: zijn hunkerende akkoorden vinden urenlang geen rust – het verlangen groeit en groeit – totdat uiteindelijk, tijdens Isoldes Liebestod, zich alles één toonaard hoger oplost dan de toonaard waarin het muziekdrama begon. Een vereniging van Tristan en Isolde is enkel mogelijk in de dood. De veeleisende partituur staat erom bekend om het publiek uit te putten, emotioneel, psychologisch én fysiek. De verlossing aan het einde van Tristan und Isolde is echter des te groter. “De wereld is arm voor iemand die nog nooit zo ziek is geweest om dit ‘helse plezier’ te proeven,” zo schreef Nietzsche ooit.

Peu d’oeuvres ont influencé l’histoire de la musique aussi profondément que le drame musical de Wagner, Tristan und Isolde. Le chef d’orchestre et spécialiste de Wagner, Antony Hermus, interprète un arrangement orchestral de 75 minutes réalisé par le compositeur néerlandais Henk de Vlieger. Cet arrangement a été étendu, spécialement pour ce concert, afin d’inclure le duo d’amour original du deuxième acte et l’Isoldes Liebestod du dernier acte. Dans ce celui-ci, la soprano finlandaise Miina-Liisa Värelä se glisse dans la peau d’Isolde tandis que le grand ténor américain Ben Gulley chante le rôle de Tristan.

Les mythes celtiques entourant la figure de Tristan - un chevalier du monde du roi Arthur - ont inspiré Wagner pour composer ce qui est peut-être le drame amoureux le plus intense de tous les temps. Mais la philosophie d’Arthur Schopenhauer est tout aussi importante que le roman en vers de Gottfried von Straßburg, Tristan. Selon ce philosophe, le «salut» réside uniquement dans la négation de la volonté de vivre. Wagner l’exprime de façon magistrale : ses accords nostalgiques ne trouvent pas de repos pendant des heures - le désir grandit et grandit - jusqu’à ce que finalement, pendant l’Isoldes Liebestod, tout se résolve une tonalité plus haute que celle dans laquelle le drame musical a commencé. L’union de Tristan et Isolde n’est possible que dans la mort. La partition exigeante est connue pour épuiser le public, émotionnellement, psychologiquement et physiquement. Few works have influenced music history as profoundly as Wagner’s musical drama Tristan und Isolde. Chief conductor and Wagner specialist Antony Hermus performs a 75-minute orchestral arrangement by Dutch composer Henk de Vlieger. This is extended, especially for this concert, to include the original love duet from the second act and Isolde’s Liebestod from the last act. In it, Finnish soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä takes the part of Isolde and American star tenor Ben Gulley sings the role of Tristan.

Celtic myths surrounding the figure of Tristan - a knight from the world of King Arthur - inspired Wagner to compose perhaps the most intense love drama of all time. Just as important as Gottfried von Straßburg’s novel in verse Tristan, however, was Arthur Schopenhauer’s philosophy. According to this philosopher, ‘salvation’ lies only in the denial of the will to live. Wagner expresses this magisterially: his yearning chords find no rest for hours - the desire grows and grows - until finally, during Isoldes Liebestod, everything resolves itself one key higher than the key in which the musical drama began. A union of Tristan and Isolde is only possible in death. The demanding score is known to exhaust the audience, emotionally, psychologically and physically. However, the redemption at the end of Tristan und Isolde is all the greater. “The world is poor for one who has never been so ill as to taste this ‘infernal pleasure’,” Nietzsche once wrote.
