Joseph Haydn rozvinul své kompoziční umě­ní k uchvacujícímu perfekcionismu a přitom si i v pozdním věku uchoval radost z experimento­vání a hledání neobvyklých řešení. Symfonie č. 98 je jeho vrcholným dílem, které dokonalou formu naplňuje překypující mladistvou invencí. Hayd­nův tvůrčí vklad do symfonického repertoáru se stal předpokladem pro vznik nejpůsobivějších děl tohoto žánru, jakým je také slavná Beethove­nova „Sedmá”, již Richard Wagner obdivně nazval „apoteózou tance“.

Joseph Haydn developed his compositional art to a captivating perfectionism, while retaining the joy of experimentation and the search for unusual solutions even in his late life. Symphony No. 98 is his crowning work, which fills the perfect form with exuberant youthful invention. Haydn's creative contribution to the symphonic repertoire became a prerequisite for the creation of the most impressive works of this genre, such as Beethoven's famous "Seventh", which Richard Wagner admiringly called "the apotheosis of dance".
