A nouveau riche Viennese is planning a big cultural event in his house and has commissioned both a comedy and a tragic opera for it. He arbitrarily decides that both works should be performed at the same time. While the young composer despairs of the decision, the comedienne Zerbinetta accepts the challenge and sums up the following performance of the opera like this: “The play goes like this: A princess has been abandoned by her bridegroom and her next suitor has not yet arrived […] We are a lively company that happens to be on the island […] as soon as an opportunity arises, we appear and get involved in the action.”
Hugo von Hoffmannsthal and Richard Strauss interweave in their Ariadne auf Naxosthe tragic sphere of opera seria with elements of Italian impromptu comedy. Strauss not only treats the voices of his singers but also his chamber orchestra with virtuosity, unfolds the magic of sound associated with his name and creates a tongue-in-cheek gem about the effect of theater and music as well as the conflict between pragmatism and idealism as sources of art production.
