After the triumphant success of the opera The Rosenkavalier, Richard Strauss and his librettist, the decadent playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal, set up a risky artistic experiment, creating a hybrid symbolist opera, a multi-layered metaphor opera, an opera - an aesthetic manifesto and at the same time a social satire: " Ariadne on Naxos."

"Ariadne" became a token of gratitude to Max Reinhardt: in the production of the director-reformer, the premiere of "The Rosenkavalier" took place. Reinhardt was now working on The Tradesman in the Nobility, with music by Strauss; the place of the Turkish ceremony in the last act was to be taken by the half-hour Ariadne auf Naxos. The Hofmannsthal libretto, the first drafts of which Strauss received in May 1911, did not arouse the composer's enthusiasm. Persuading the co-author, the playwright wrote him a famous letter - Ariadne-Brief - where he outlined his view on the content of Ariadne. According to Hofmannsthal, Ariadne auf Naxos is first and foremost an opera about fidelity: “Constancy is stupor and death. Whoever wants to live must transform himself, must change: he must forget. And at the same time, it is precisely in constancy, in non-forgetfulness and fidelity that the deep dignity of a person lies.

The not-too-successful premiere, held in October 1912 in Stuttgart, confirmed Strauss's fears, and work on Ariadne continued for another four years. In the new edition, Molière's play was cut off; it was replaced by a prologue, which takes place in the house of a certain rich man. Thus, the opera consists of two parts: an arioso-recitative prologue and a single act, with the second part being a theater within a theater, an ironic collage of opera seria and opera buffa, tragedy and comedy. The iconic figure of the Composer appears in the second version of Ariadne; like Octavian in The Rosenkavalier, it is a travesty role. Young Composer - author of an opera commissioned for the celebration; at first, the idea of ​​combining a sublime creation on an ancient mythological plot with a frivolous booth in the spirit of commedia dell'arte seems blasphemous to him. But the fruitful union of high and low, heavenly and earthly is still possible; it is outlined already in the prologue, when the Composer succumbs to the charms of the cheerful Zerbinetta. The party of the windy coquette, which runs the four gentlemen-comedians, is one of the most difficult in the world soprano repertoire; Zerbinetta's dizzying aria Großmächtige Prinzessin is woven from continuous coloratura.

In the second version, the opera was first staged on October 4, 1916 in the very city where the events of the prologue unfold - in Vienna. The Viennese intonation also permeates the exquisitely melodic, chamber music of Ariadne, the author of which, in his own words, “got rid of the Wagnerian shell” and considered the music of the great Viennese classic Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart his aesthetic ideal. Таким образом, опера состоит из двух частей: ариозно-речитативного пролога и единственного акта, причем вторая часть – это театр в театре, ироничный коллаж оперы-сериа и оперы-буффа, трагедии и комедии.
