A rich man had a young composer write an opera for a party: Ariadne auf Naxos. But because this tragic opera about Ariadne, abandoned by her lover Theseus, is not entertaining enough for him, he also invites a troupe of comedians to perform their antics at the same time as the tragedy. An impertinence for the composer, but also an opportunity: In this way, the sadness of the abandoned Ariadne collides with the comedian Zerbinetta's love of life. In his production of the work, which premiered in 1916, David Hermann lets the world of Greek tragedy meet the lightness of French rococo. »Ariadne auf Naxos« is an opera about opera, about loyalty and change and about the transformative power of love.

Ein reicher Mann hat sich für ein Fest von einem jungen Komponisten eine Oper schreiben lassen: Ariadne auf Naxos. Aber weil ihm diese tragische Oper um die von ihrem Geliebten Theseus verlassene Ariadne dann doch nicht unterhaltsam genug ist, lädt er zusätzlich eine Komödiantentruppe ein, die gleichzeitig mit dem Trauerspiel ihre Possen aufführen sollen. Eine Zumutung für den Komponisten, aber auch eine Chance: Denn so prallt die Trauer der verlassenen Ariadne auf die Lebenslust der Komödiantin Zerbinetta. David Hermann lässt in seiner Inszenierung des 1916 uraufgeführten Werkes die Welt der griechischen Tragödie auf die Leichtigkeit des französischen Rokoko treffen. »Ariadne auf Naxos« ist eine Oper über die Oper, über Treue und Wechsel und über die Verwandlungskraft der Liebe.
