אריודנטה היא "אופרה סריה" (אופרה רצינית) בשלוש מערכות, המבוססת על פואמה איטלקית אפית בשם "אורלנדו הזועם" מאת לודוביקו אריוסטו. "אורלנדו הזועם" היוותה בסיס ליצירות אמנות רבות בתחום הספרות והמוסיקה, ביניהן עוד שתי אופרות מפורסמות של הנדל - אלצ'ינה ואורלנדו, והמחזה השייקספירי המפורסם "מהומה רבה על לא דבר". אף על פי שאין הוכחה לכך ששייקספיר ביסס את המחזה שלו על "אורלנדו הזועם", מי שמכיר את "מהומה רבה" בוודאי יזהה את הדמיון העלילתי בין המחזה של שייקספיר לאריודנטה, במיוחד באופן בו המשרתת מגויסת לעזרת הנבל ללא ידיעתה לטובת ביצוע המזימה שלו. עד היום אנחנו לא יודעים מי כתב את הליברית של אריודנטה, אבל מה שברור שהוא הצליח להפוך סיפור על בגידה, שקרים, וכבוד בחצר המלוכה הסקוטי לבסיס המושלם ליצירת מופת אופראית שעזרה להנדל להתחיל דרך חדשה ברגע קריטי בקריירה שלו.

Ariodante is an "opera seria" (serious opera) in three acts, based on an epic Italian poem called "Orlando the Furious" by Ludovico Ariosto. "The Furious Orlando" formed the basis for many works of art in the field of literature and music, among them two more famous operas by Handel - Alcina and Orlando , and the famous Shakespeare play "Much Ado About Nothing". Although there is no proof that Shakespeare based his play on "Orlando the Furious", those familiar with "Great Ado" will surely recognize the plot similarity between Shakespeare's play and Riodante, especially in the way the maid enlists the help of the villain without her knowledge in order to carry out his plot . To this day we do not know who wrote Ariodante 's libretto, but what is clear is that he managed to turn a story of betrayal, lies, and honor in the Scottish royal court into the perfect basis for an operatic masterpiece that helped Handel to start a new path at a critical moment in his career.
