Arminio (HWV 36) is an opera composed by George Frideric Handel. The libretto is based on a libretto of the same name by Antonio Salvi, which had been set to music by Alessandro Scarlatti. It is a fictionalisation of events surrounding the Germanic leader Arminius, who defeated the Romans under Publius Quinctilius Varus at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9, and his wife Thusnelda.

One such is ARMINIO from 1736, an opera that has been grossly underestimated by both musicians and musicologists over the decades. The Cheruscan prince Arminius succeeds in defeating the Roman legions in the famous Herrmannsschlacht, which makes it possible for the Germans to set out on a self-determined form of government. The world-famous countertenor and Handel expert Max Emanuel Cencic, most recently a guest at the STAATSTHEATER in September 2014 with the celebrated ROKOKO programme, appears at the HÄNDEL FESTIVAL 2016 in a dual role: as director and as actor in the title role, which Handel composed for the renowned castrato Domenico Anniballi. The young Greek conductor George Petrou conducts the Armonia Atenea orchestra, which he founded and which Cencic accompanied at his concert in Karlsruhe. Other international stars such as Layla Claire, Vince Yi, Ruxandra Donose and Pavel Kudinov complete the cast.
