Laura Kaminsky's sensational opera As One has been the most performed opera in the United States since its premiere in 2014. It is that because of its musical and artistic starting points, but also because of its trance theme and great treatment of the subject. The work combines contemporary opera with performance art and video art. The work strongly interacts with the audience and strongly strives to stimulate social discussion.

As One is a chamber opera for two voices, Hannah before (baritone) and Hannah after (mezzo-soprano) share the role of the transgender protagonist. The piece consists of 15 songs that form a three-act story. Through the means of compassion and humor, we go through Hannah's experiences and feelings from a young person in a small town to her studies and finally traveling alone to a foreign country, where she understands the truth about herself.

Laura Kaminskyn kohua herättänyt As One -ooppera on ollut Yhdysvaltain esitetyin ooppera 2014 ensi-iltansa jälkeen. Se on sitä musiikillisten ja taiteellisten lähtökohtiensa takia, mutta myös trans-aiheensa ja hienon aiheenkäsittelyn takia. Teos yhdistää nykyoopperan esitystaiteeseen ja videotaiteeseen. As One on kamariooppera kahdelle äänelle, Hannah ennen (baritoni) ja Hannah jälkeen (mezzosopraano) jakavat transgender-päähenkilön roolin. Teos koostuu 15 laulusta, jotka muodostavat kolminäytöksisen tarinan. Myötätunnon ja huumorin keinoin käydään läpi Hannahin kokemukset ja tunteet pikkukaupungin nuoresta opiskeluaikoihin ja lopulta matkaamaan yksin vieraaseen maahan, jossa hän ymmärtää totuuden itsestään.
