Atar, who has risen from a simple soldier to become a royal general, and his wife Aspasia are deeply in love (duet  “Qui dove scherza l'aura” ). Their happiness would be complete if they could live a retired life together. Aspasia is convinced that King Axur would not refuse her husband, considering his merits, if he asked him to do so (aria  "Perdermi? e chi potria svellermi dal tuo fianco?" ).

Although Atar suffers from having to leave Aspasia frequently, he feels a duty to his king and to the people who worship him. Suddenly fearful shouts disturb the couple's idyll: A fire is raging in Atar's house. While Atar rushes to the scene of the fire, Aspasia is kidnapped by Altamor.

Atar, der vom einfachen Soldaten zum königlichen Feldherrn aufgestiegen ist, und seine Frau Aspasia sind in inniger Liebe verbunden (Duett „Qui dove scherza l´aura“). Ihr Glück wäre vollkommen, wenn sie zusammen ein zurückgezogenes Leben führen könnten. Aspasia ist überzeugt, dass König Axur ihrem Mann, in Anbetracht seiner Verdienste, dies nicht verweigern würde, wenn er ihn darum bäte (Arie „Perdermi? e chi potria svellermi dal tuo fianco?“).

Obwohl Atar darunter leidet, Aspasia häufig verlassen zu müssen, fühlt er sich seinem König und dem Volk, das ihn verehrt, verpflichtet. Plötzlich stören angstvolle Rufe die Idylle des Paares: Ein Feuer wütet in Atars Haus. Während Atar zur Brandstelle eilt, wird Aspasia von Altamor entführt.
