We think that Bach’s St John Passion is just as beautiful as its brother St Matthew (and a great deal shorter!) Once again the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra is working alongside Cappella Amsterdam, one of the best chamber choirs in the Netherlands, for the traditional Easter concerts. The piece will be conducted by choirmaster Daniel Reuss.
The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra
The Netherlands Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1955, since when its rich history has included many notable achievements. Even after the merger with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra in 1985, the ensemble lost none of its unique identity. The dynamics between the members of the orchestra are particularly striking. They rarely play under the baton of a conductor but interact with each other almost instinctively. There is a remarkable chemistry, as is apparent during every performance. Gordan Nikolić has been the leader, or ‘concertmaster’, of the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra since 2004.

Stiekem is Bachs Johannes-Passion minstens zo mooi als grote broer Matthäus (en een minder lange zit!). Voor de traditionele passieconcerten werkt het Nederlands Kamerorkest dit jaar wederom samen met Cappella Amsterdam, een van de beste kamerkoren van Nederland, onder leiding van gevierd koordirigent Daniel Reuss.

De Johannes-Passion en Daniel Reuss
De koormuziek van Bach zit Daniel Reuss als gegoten. In zijn rijke carrière dirigeerde hij de Johannes al zo’n veertig keer. Bach voltooide zijn Johannes-Passion een paar jaar eerder dan zijn Matthäus-Passion. Hij schreef het meesterwerk in 1724 voor zijn eerste Goede Vrijdag als cantor in Leipzig.

Cappella Amsterdam leeft zich uit
Het koor in de Johannes, vertolkt door Cappella Amsterdam, speelt een opmerkelijke rol: het verbeeldt het volk dat veel roept, schreeuwt en scheldt. De onhoudbare volkswoede komt als in een soort rechtbankdrama tot een hoogtepunt met de onvermijdelijke veroordeling van Jezus tot de kruisdood. Samen met zijn Matthäus-Passion behoort Bachs Johannes-Passion tot de meest geliefde en mooiste passiemuziek.
