Il Tamerlano, ovvero la morte di Bajazet andò in scena durante la stagione del Carnevale del 1735. Bajazet, potente sultano dell’impero ottomano, viene sconfitto da Tamerlano, condottiero mongolo, e si suicida: si tratta di personaggi storici, simboli della grandezza e del declino dell’impero con cui la Serenissima aveva dovuto confrontarsi per tutto il corso della sua storia. La ‘tragedia per musica’ composta da Vivaldi (qui eseguita nell’edizione critica ricostruita da Bernardo Ticci) è un pasticcio, ovvero un’opera in cui il confluirono non solo pagine preesistenti dell’autore, ma anche di altri compositori: all’epoca una prassi consolidata, che non toglie nulla all’irresistibile incisività della scrittura vivaldiana.

The Tamerlane, or the death of Bajazet  , was staged during the Carnival season of 1735. Bajazet, powerful sultan of the Ottoman Empire, is defeated by Tamerlane, a Mongol leader, and commits suicide: these are historical characters, symbols of greatness and of the decline of the empire with which the Serenissima had had to deal with throughout the course of its history. The 'tragedy for music' composed by Vivaldi (performed here in the critical edition reconstructed by Bernardo Ticci) is  a mess , or a work in which not only pre-existing pages by the author but also by other composers converged: at the time a consolidated practice, which does not detract from the irresistible incisiveness of Vivaldi's writing.
