Stravinsky's Ballets Russes is a new production of the Festival d'Aix at the Stadium de Vitrolles from 8 to 12 July 2023 during which three legendary ballets — The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913) — will be performed for the first time in a single evening by the Orchestre de Paris under the baton of conductor, and young prodigy, Klaus Mäkelä. Music and images will interplay through the live projection of three parabolic films created exclusively for the production by Rebecca Zlotowski (The Firebird), Bertrand Mandico (Petrushka) and Evangelia Kranioti (The Rite of Spring).

Presenting in a single evening three mythical ballets commissioned by Diaghilev from Stravinsky for his Ballets Russes company – The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911) and The Rite of Spring (1913) – is a musical achievement in itself. These scores, incredibly rich in colours and rhythms, and created in Paris with choreography by Fokine or Nijinsky and sets by Bakst or Benois, were immediately considered decisive milestones of artistic modernity, and caused a scandal. In order to rediscover the ideal of total artwork that they convey, three inventive film directors – Rebecca Zlotowski, Bertrand Mandico and Evangelia Kranioti – propose a free reverie about each of the ballets: three parables films that bring art, the human condition,
and nature into conflict with the idea of excess. In collaboration with the Orchestre de Paris and its music director Klaus Mäkelä, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence thus writes a new page of its rich history in the powerful setting of the Stadium de Vitrolles, weaving a privileged link between music and image.

La prouesse musicale consiste d’abord à donner en une seule soirée trois ballets mythiques commandés par Diaghilev à Stravinski pour sa compagnie des Ballets russes : L’Oiseau de feu (1910), Petrouchka (1911) et Le Sacre du printemps (1913). Ces pages d’une richesse de couleurs et de rythmes inouïe, créées à Paris dans des chorégraphies de Fokine ou Nijinski et des décors de Bakst ou Benois, sont immédiatement considérées comme des jalons décisifs de la modernité artistique et font scandale. Pour retrouver l’idéal d’art total qu’elles véhiculent, trois cinéastes inventifs – Rebecca Zlotowski, Bertrand Mandico et Evangelia Kranioti – proposent une libre rêverie autour de chacun des ballets : trois films paraboles mettant tour à tour l’art, la condition humaine et la nature aux prises avec l’idée de démesure. En collaboration avec l’Orchestre de Paris et son chef Klaus Mäkelä, le Festival d’Aix-en-Provence souhaite ainsi écrire dans le cadre puissant du Stadium de Vitrolles une nouvelle page de sa riche histoire tissant un lien privilégié entre musique et image.
