In 1844, Ferenc Erkel, after winning the competition to set Kölcsey's Hymn to music, began to work on József Katona's much criticized drama as a possible opera theme. History extended the time of composition for a long time: first due to the war of independence, and then the censorship of the dictatorship that followed, the audience had to wait until March 9, 1861, before the work could be performed in its entirety at the then National Theatre. As a result of or in spite of the high-level additions and revisions, Bánk bán , which has always maintained its successthe special feature of his current series is that his text and musical material were created using the original version of the work and the version from 1939, which is best known to the general public, bearing the name of Kálmán Nádasdy. In this way, the story management is the most similar to Katona's original ideas, but at the same time, we don't have to do without the evergreen text of the grand aria " Hazam, hazam... " with its opening line.

Erkel Ferenc 1844-ben, a Kölcsey Himnuszának megzenésítésére kiírt pályázaton aratott győzelme után kezdett el foglalkozni Katona József sokat támadott drámájával mint lehetséges operatémával. A történelem hosszúra nyújtotta a komponálás idejét: előbb a szabadságharc, majd az azt követő diktatúra cenzúrája miatt egészen 1861. március 9-ig kellett várnia a közönségnek, mire a mű teljes egészében megszólalhatott az akkori Nemzeti Színházban. A nívós kiegészítések és átdolgozások hatására vagy ellenére a sikerét mindig őrző Bánk bán mostani sorozatának különlegessége, hogy szövege és zenei anyaga a mű ősváltozata és a Nádasdy Kálmán nevével fémjelzett 1939-es – a nagyközönség számára leginkább ismert – változat felhasználásával jött létre. A történetvezetés így hasonlít legjobban Katona eredeti gondolataihoz, ugyanakkor nem kell nélkülöznünk a nagyária „Hazám, hazám…” kezdősorral örökzölddé vált szövegét sem.
