Sir George Benjamin is one of the most original and successful opera composers of our time. He was the last student of Olivier Messiaen, who attested to Benjamin's "similar talent" "as it is said of the young Mozart". The Brit himself will be at the podium at the performance of his latest opera »Lessons in Love and Violence«, which »alternates between earthy emotionality and angelic purity« (New York Times). "I like concert performances of opera," says Benjamin, "because the orchestra can be seen and heard with greater clarity." The international cast of singers bring glamor and richness of voice to the stage, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra is well known for its sound culture.
