György Ligeti was inspired by the powerful text of the Catholic requiem mass to compose one of the great choral works of the 20th century. His apocalyptic Requiem as well as his orchestral work Apparitions convey a dense, tense tonal language – to be experienced here as part of the Berlin Philharmonic Biennale with Sir Simon Rattle conducting. There is a subtle cross-connection to the other works of the evening. Both Bernd Alois Zimmermann's bitingly humorous Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu and Bohuslav Martinů's neo-romantic viola concerto (soloist: Amihai Grosz) make hidden references to requiem settings by other composers.

György Ligeti ließ sich vom bildkräftigen Text der katholischen Totenmesse zu einem der großen Chorwerke des 20. Jahrhunderts anregen. Sein apokalyptisches Requiem wie auch sein Orchesterwerk Apparitions vermitteln eine dichte, spannungsgeladene Klangsprache – hier zu erleben im Rahmen der Biennale der Berliner Philharmoniker mit Sir Simon Rattle als Dirigent. Eine subtile Querverbindung gibt es zu den weiteren Werken des Abends. Denn sowohl Bernd Alois Zimmermanns bissig­-humorvolle Musique pour les soupers du Roi Ubu als auch Bohuslav Martinůs neoromantisches Bratschenkonzert (Solist: Amihai Grosz) nehmen versteckt auf Requiem-­Vertonungen anderer Komponisten Bezug.
