En cette fin de 16e siècle, qui est aussi celle du règne d’Élisabeth 1re, la mode du madrigal à l’italienne a bel et bien fécondé le génie musical anglais, déjà friand de vocalité. On assiste à l’éclosion d’un répertoire foisonnant, celui du Lute Song, chanson accompagnée au luth, autrement appelée Ayre. Si le génie de Dowland a fait de l’ombre à ses contemporains, ce programme cherche à leur rendre justice. Il révèle leur capacité d’adaptation au style en le développant en quatuor vocal et en ajoutant d’autres instruments tout aussi intéressants. L’effectif instrumental réduit permet d’entrer dans l’intimité et la poésie de ces œuvres. Ici, on nous entretient d’amantes anonymes, des beautés ordinaires de la nature, de peines simples mais profondes, et puis, bien sûr, de cette mort omniprésente, quotidienne, que l’on fréquente en familiarité.

At the end of the 16th century, which was also that of the reign of Elizabeth 1 st , the fashion for the Italian-style madrigal had indeed fertilized the English musical genius, already fond of vocality . We are witnessing the emergence of an abundant repertoire, that of the Lute Song, song accompanied by the lute, otherwise called Ayre. If Dowland's genius overshadowed his contemporaries, this program seeks to do them justice. It reveals their ability to adapt to the style by developing it into a vocal quartet and adding other equally interesting instruments. The reduced instrumental staff allows us to enter into the intimacy and poetry of these works. Here, we are told of anonymous lovers, of the ordinary beauties of nature, of simple but profound sorrows, and then, of course, of this omnipresent, daily death that we frequent in familiarity.
