Bluebeard’s Castle
A gloomy castle wall, the notorious landlord Bluebeard alone with his new bride. But don't worry: this is not a matter of life and death - it's about love. At the beginning, according to the libretto, there is nothing more to be seen than the gloomy, cavernous interior of a castle wall; no furniture, no windows, only seven locked doors. Even without a stage set, the bleak desolation of the scenery cannot be ignored. Bartók's ambitious score inventively creates a tonal mirror image of the scenic multicoloredness to these images, and incidentally ensures that a concert performance leaves nothing to be desired in terms of plasticity. Throughout the colorful variety, a (blood-)red thread runs through the question of how unreservedly a love between two people can be and thereby abandon all secrets and niches of retreat.

Ein düsteres Burggemäuer, der berüchtigte Hausherr Blaubart alleine mit seiner neuen Braut. Aber keine Angst: Hier geht es nicht um Leben und Tod – hier geht’s um die Liebe. Zu Anfang ist laut Libretto nicht mehr zu sehen als das düstere, höhlenartige Innere eines Burggemäuers; kein Mobiliar, keine Fenster, nur sieben verschlossene Türen. Auch ohne Bühnenbild ist die karge Trostlosigkeit der Szenerie nicht zu überhören. Zu diesen Bildern lässt Bartóks ambitionierte Partitur erfindungsreich ein klangliches Spiegelbild der szenischen Vielfarbigkeit entstehen und sorgt ganz nebenbei dafür, dass eine konzertante Aufführung an Plastizität nichts zu wünschen übrig lässt. Durch die bunte Abwechslung hindurch zieht sich als (blut-)roter Faden die Frage, wie rückhaltlos eine Liebe zwischen zwei Menschen sein und dabei alle Geheimnisse und Rückzugsnischen aufgeben kann.
