This stylistically diverse programme under the direction of the Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko plainly revolves around existence, the (in) completeness of same, and those questions that arise from not fathoming its ultimate meaning. Following the laments in the first part of the programme, Charles Ives’ musically framed questions about the meaning of existence remain unanswered for the moment. The evening draws to a close with Schubert’s “Unfinished,” the very symphony that, from the composer’s perspective, may well have been regarded as finished and complete in its seemingly yet-to-be finalised form.
