Dans une stricte communauté calviniste du nord de l’Écosse, la jeune Bess qu’anime une ferveur mystique s’éprend d’un étranger qui travaille sur une plate-forme pétrolière. Peu après leur mariage, Jan réchappe à un accident. Désormais paralysé, il pousse Bess à chercher le plaisir auprès d’autres hommes…
De même que la plate-forme brise les flots de la mer du Nord, la foi et l’amour éperdu de Bess l’entraînent dans un sacrifice à contre-courant de la morale commune.

Cette parabole naturaliste a inspiré à Lars Von Trier un film couronné en 1996 du Grand Prix du Festival de Cannes. Son adaptation lyrique signée Royce Vavrek et Missy Mazzoli, compositrice née en 1980, a reçu en 2017 l’International Opera Award for Best World Premiere, et a connu dès 2019 une deuxième production, créée à Edimbourg, à laquelle s’est associé l’Opéra Comique.

Efficacité du livret, lyrisme musical et puissance évocatrice se conjuguent dans la vibrante traduction scénique de Tom Morris. Menés par Mathieu Romano, l’Orchestre de chambre de Paris, l’ensemble Aedes et une distribution hors pair servent cet opéra d’une densité exceptionnelle.

An outstanding cast serves this work of exceptional density, where faith and love lead the heroine into a sacrifice against the tide of common morality.

In a strict Calvinist community in the north of Scotland, young Bess, driven by a mystical fervor, falls in love with a stranger who works on an oil rig. Shortly after their wedding, Jan survived an accident. Now paralyzed, he pushes Bess to seek pleasure from other men...
Just as the platform breaks the waves of the North Sea, Bess's faith and desperate love lead her into a sacrifice against the tide of common morality.

This naturalistic parable inspired Lars Von Trier to make a film that won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996. Its lyrical adaptation by Royce Vavrek and Missy Mazzoli, composer born in 1980, received the International Opera Award for Best World Premiere in 2017, and saw a second production in 2019, created in Edinburgh, with which the Comical opera.

The effectiveness of the libretto, musical lyricism and evocative power come together in Tom Morris' vibrant scenic translation. Led by Mathieu Romano, the Paris Chamber Orchestra, the Aedes ensemble and an outstanding cast serve this opera of exceptional density.
