At the end of the 1920s, Berlin's nightlife was swinging in all shades and Sally Bowles was the star in the frivolous Kit Kat Club, where neither the effects of the global economic crisis nor the signs of National Socialist terror were taken seriously. Life is a stage and a career in the spotlight is the lifelong dream of the impulsive singer. Her romance with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw cannot change that, not even when fun turns into love. Marrying Cliff and following him to the US is not an option for the artist. She believes in the great success and remains - despite the signs of the times - in the politically darkened city.
Artists from all four sections of Volkstheater – music theater, drama, dance company and the North German Philharmonic Rostock – take part in the performance of this highly emotional contemporary document. In-house director Daniel Pfluger stages the multi-award-winning musical classic, which, with world-famous hits such as Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome or Money, Money , tells of a society heading for barbarism as well as of passion, love and hope.

Ende der zwanziger Jahre swingt das Berliner Nachtleben in allen Schattierungen und Sally Bowles ist der Star im frivolen Kit-Kat-Club, wo man weder die Auswirkungen der Weltwirtschaftskrise noch die Vorzeichen des nationalsozialistischen Terrors ernst nimmt. Das Leben ist eine Bühne und die Karriere im Scheinwerferlicht der Lebenstraum der impulsiven Sängerin. Daran kann auch ihre Romanze mit dem jungen amerikanischen Schriftsteller Cliff Bradshaw nichts ändern, nicht einmal, als aus Spaß Liebe wird. Cliff zu heiraten und in die USA zu folgen, ist für die Künstlerin keine Option. Sie glaubt an den großen Erfolg und bleibt – trotz der Zeichen der Zeit – in der sich politisch verdunkelnden Stadt.
Künstler:innen aller vier Sparten des Volkstheaters – Musiktheater, Schauspiel, Tanzcompagnie und Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock – beteiligen sich an der Aufführung dieses hochemotionalen Zeitdokuments. Hausregisseur Daniel Pfluger inszeniert den vielfach ausgezeichneten Musical-Klassiker, der mit weltberühmten Hits wie Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome oder Money, Money ebenso von einer auf die Barbarei zusteuernden Gesellschaft wie von Leidenschaft, Liebe und Hoffnung erzählt.
