2015 Festival: Candide

Opera created in New York in 1956, Candide is an adaptation of Voltaire's novel in which Bernstein finds irony and cynicism allowing him to enlighten American society in the 1950s. Subtitled "comic operatta", Candide is a gem of freshness and gaiety. Simultaneously opera, operetta and musical comedy, the work is also a satire of McCarthyism and an appeal to the conscience of citizens against inquisitive pressures. This co-production premiered at the Glimmerglass Festival (New York) in July 2015 shines with inventiveness. The staging of Francesca Zambello – whose work the Bordeaux public had been able to appreciate in the productions of La Traviata (2000) or even the Flying Dutchman(2002) — sublimates one of Broadway's leading scores.
