Aaron Copland’s Clarinet Concerto begins with spacious, bittersweet melodies before the jazz-inflected world of the second half takes hold. The clarinet leads the way with the first big tune in Schubert’s Third Symphony too. Spirited, buoyant and energetic – this is a work that overflows with charm. There’s a gentle intermezzo and an earthy, foot-stomping dance, before the strings launch into a dizzying tarantella.
