Invictissima, invincible, the Habsburg emperors, dukes and kings appeared to their contemporaries in their limitless abundance of power. The Habsburgs also demonstrated their power in the field of music, employing many of the most talented musicians from across Europe at their courts. Jacobus Vaet (ca. 1529–1567) was one of them: born and educated in what is now Belgium, he was later appointed Kapellmeister to the court of Archduke Maximilian II of Austria. His music is characterized by harmoniously bold ideas and an impressive versatility. With Invictissima, Cinquecento presents motets specially composed for Emperor Maximilian II, liturgical music for the Wiener Hofburgkapelle, including settings of Miserere mei , Deusand Salve Regina , and French chansons of the time, mass parts, motets and chansons by Jacob Regnart (1540–1599), Jacobus Vaet (1529–1567) and Philippe de Monte (1521–1603).
The Ensemble Cinquecento is one of the leading vocal formations in Europe and a quintet of renowned soloists. It takes its name from the golden age of the Italian Renaissance.
