В основе сюжета оперы одноимённая новелла Проспера Мериме. В центре спектакля – цыганка Кармен. Её своенравную натуру отличает дух свободы и независимости. Для Кармен не существует преград и законов. Она наслаждается вниманием мужчин, не задумываясь об их чувствах, изменяет судьбы тех, кто оказывается с ней рядом.

Перед чарами Кармен не может устоять ни один мужчина, в их числе и солдат Хозе. Охваченный страстью, он нарушает приказ, способствуя её побегу. Ссора омрачает их первое любовное свидание. Неожиданный приход сержанта Цуниги решает судьбу Хозе, который вынужден остаться с контрабандистами.

Проходит время, и чувства Кармен охладели. Хозе страдает от измены долгу, тоски по родному дому, от ревности и страсти. Карты предсказывают Кармен трагическую судьбу, но её влечёт новое чувство к тореадору Эскамильо. Развязка трагедии предсказуема и неизбежна...

Спектакль отличает действенность, сочность красок, естественность чувств и переживаний, накал страстей, яркие образы и герои. Действие оперы держит зрителя в напряжении до самой финальной сцены, а танцы в стиле фламенко привносят в постановку особый испанский колорит.

The plot of the opera is based on the short story of the same name by Prosper Merimee. In the center of the performance is the gypsy Carmen. Her wayward nature is distinguished by the spirit of freedom and independence. For Carmen there are no barriers and laws. She enjoys the attention of men, without thinking about their feelings, changes the fate of those who are next to her.

Not a single man can resist the charms of Carmen, including Jose's soldier. Overwhelmed by passion, he disobeys orders, facilitating her escape. A quarrel overshadows their first love date. The unexpected arrival of Sergeant Zuniga decides the fate of Jose, who is forced to stay with the smugglers.

Time passes, and Carmen's feelings have cooled. Jose suffers from betrayal of duty, homesickness, jealousy and passion. The cards predict a tragic fate for Carmen, but she is attracted by a new feeling for the bullfighter Escamillo. The denouement of the tragedy is predictable and inevitable...

The performance is distinguished by effectiveness, richness of colors, naturalness of feelings and experiences, intensity of passions, vivid images and heroes. The action of the opera keeps the viewer in suspense until the very final scene, and flamenco dances bring a special Spanish flavor to the production.
